15 Healthier Homemade Ice Cream Recipes

"Ice cream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!" Who doesn't like a frozen treat on a warm summer day? But if you're reading this article, I'm confident you're not screaming for the sugar, fat, and empty calories. By making some simple substitutions, you can enjoy a sweet frozen treat that is good for you too.

Making ice cream is easier than you might think and actually doesn't require many ingredients. Most recipes are gluten-free and using coconut milk makes it dairy-free too. It can be as simple as throwing your favorite fruits and non-fat "milk" in a blender and then putting it in the freezer to set up. My favorite way to make ice cream is to let my children choose the flavors and make it with me. Here are the steps to make ice cream with a few plastic bags and some simple ingredients.

Super Simple Homemade Ice Cream

Supplies: One gallon and one pint plastic zipper storage plastic bags.

1 cup liquid (non-fat milk, almond milk coconut milk, soy milk). Coconut milk is my favorite.
2 tablespoon of sweetener
½ teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 cup of finely chopped fruit (optional)

1. Place all ingredients in the pint size bag and seal.
2. Fill the gallon size bag halfway with ice cubes and 6 tablespoons of salt.
3. Place the pint sized bag inside gallon size bag and seal the gallon size bag.
4. Shake vigorously for four minutes until the ice cream forms in the pint size bag.
5. Enjoy your homemade ice cream.

Has anyone really tried these. Why is it necessary to use "non-milk" instead of fat-free - 8/5/2017   12:07:45 PM
I have an ice cream maker, but the idea of being able to make a smaller amount with just a couple of zip lock bags is really appealing! - 6/5/2017   10:39:02 AM

Some of them sound good, true. But I want to find ones that do NOT rely on "fake food" artificial sweeteners, which are much LESS healthy than people believe. There is no way I am putting a whole cup of Splenda into our food or, in fact, into anything except the trash. - 5/20/2015   7:31:39 PM

Hmmm... sugar and skim milk (more sugar) - 8/2/2012   10:29:16 AM
If you have a Vita Mix or large blender you might enjoy the following:
    1 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla or 1/4 cup sugar fee Torani flavorings like English Toffee or Almond Rocca
1/3 cup sugar or less subsitute sugar of choice
    1/3 cup powdered milk
    32 oz ice
optional: (if making with vanilla may add 1/2-1 fruits) sometimes will make it looser like a shake if too much fruit.
Turn on low and then turn dial up to high. use tamper to push ice down..Done when all ice is pulverized. Makes great tasting soft serve. Makes ice cream in about 30 sec.

if you use vanillla almond milk or chocolate you don't need any sugar. Create 32 Flavors
Note:Carob chip is better than chocolate chip. Only a handful needed. Recipe serves 3-4

I really have to say that BUTTER PECAN is my favorite flavor of ice cream, but since I'm trying to stay away from ice cream (and milk as they aren't good for me), I find eating strawberries frozen at night is as good as strawberry ice cream for me.
I'm made frozen Pops, with strawberries and diet soda and they are good, too. - 8/2/2012   12:06:31 AM

Do you put the small bag inside the big bag, or just hold it on top while you shake? - 8/1/2012   4:55:30 PM
yum! I just tried it right now because I was so curious to see if it worked...it does. :) It is more icy and definitely not like store bought ice cream but it is enough to cure a sweet tooth. I used half xylitol half white sugar for the sweetner and it was perfect. Maybe wear some gloves because your hands will freeze! - 8/1/2012   4:18:56 PM
I have never made ice cream this way but, it does sound simple enough. I am going to try it. Thanks. Oh, how many calories does this recipe have? - 8/1/2012   3:52:58 PM

I have made this too, but I used frozen fruit with the non-dairy milk, some Stevia, and put it in a blender. Makes it a little faster and you don't have to deal with the bag It is very good. My favorite is strawberry ice cream. You could add some nuts and some chocolate pieces, too after you have blended it together. - 8/1/2012   2:42:46 PM
