So you think you CAN'T dance?

Do you feel like most workouts don't work for your size or physical limitations?

Or maybe you simply don't like to follow structured workouts like classes or DVDs?

I promise you that this DVD will change that. It's the most innovative workout I have ever seen. Ever. I don't use those words lightly, and I've never used them before today.

Misty Tripoli's Body Groove: Delicious Dance DVD belongs in every exerciser's collection. Whether you love to dance or hate it. Whether you're super fit or just starting out. Whether you have mobility issues, physical limitations, or are the epitome of health. Every single person can enjoy and benefit from this DVD. Find out why everyone who has tried it at SparkPeople loved it so much—including one tester who (formerly) hated dancing and workout DVDs in general!

Forget what you think you know about dancing, moving and exercising. Watch this preview from the Delicious Dance DVD and then we'll talk.

(For even more video previews from the DVD, check out bodygroove.com/freevideos.)

"EVERYONE can dance and everyone has their own unique expression, dance or way of moving!  Once we get past the fear that we look stupid or uncool and begin to celebrate the awesomeness of how our bodies move, we can begin to love our bodies and our own unique expression of movement." – Misty Tripoli

Amen.

The preview above touched on the philosophy behind Body Groove, and showed one of the actual workout segments on the DVD. As you can see, it's a unique approach to exercise that:
  • Allows the follower to choose their own intensity, range of motion and movement
  • Has no "right" or "wrong" way to follow along
  • Doesn't dictate when to move or what foot to start with
  • Lets you express yourself without fear of judgment
  • Encourages you to move in a way that feels right to you
  • Works the body in multiple different angles and motions
Misty is so encouraging and approachable throughout, and her style of cueing is about listening to yourself: doing what feels right for you that day, changing that the next day, and allowing for a variety day after day. I think these workouts (the DVD includes five programmed segments varying from 24-39 minutes long, or you can program your own workout using individual segments that are 5-10 minutes each) are perfect for exercisers of all intensity levels and mobility levels because it's so easy to do whatever works for you.

I enjoy choreographed dance or aerobic workouts because I have a background in dance. But I do not feel comfortable doing dance classes in public or even dancing at a party or club. And even though I like learning and mastering a routine on a DVD, I usually get bored with it after a few tries. In contrast, this DVD allows me to "groove" in my own way, which is empowering but just plain fun, too! I don't have to think as hard while I work out (which is a nice change of pace), and I can make it different every time I try it. If I want to go easier, I can. If I want more intensity, I can choose to turn it up. If I want more ideas for how to move, all I need to do is watch the dozen or so dancers on the DVD with Misty. Every time I do the DVD it's just as fun and engaging as the first time. And I never have to feel uncomfortable or silly for not being able to keep up or grasp a move.

I gave a copy of "Delicious Dance" to three others to try. Here's what they said:

Tanya, SparkPeople's Healthy Eating Expert
"When I first tried aerobics classes in college, I knew that group fitness classes weren't for me. Exercising in a group made me feel uncomfortable about my physicality and musicality. I'd focus so much on watching the instructor, trying to perfect the timing and movements, that I'd feel my stressed out. I usually feel the same way about workout DVDs. I usually don't like following the leader or being told how or when to move.

"Knowing how much I dislike group workouts and DVDs, Coach Nicole introduced me to the Body Groove DVD. After watching the demo I was intrigued because the approach seemed more focused on movement and connection with the body and less about doing it perfectly. I LOVE this approach and format! Misty Tripoli encourages you to move in a way that is comfortable, at the intensity level that works for you. She engages all the parts of your body to increase not only range of motion, but body awareness, too. I have done this DVD several times a week since receiving it a few weeks ago, and love pushing myself in new ways each time I try it. There is no right or wrong way to move or follow this DVD, and that's something that I can appreciate! I already feel more confident!"

Rachel, V.P. of Finance and Accounting at SparkPeople
"I have a background in dance, so I was instantly attracted to this DVD. It is super fun and easy to follow.  The format seems really innovative to me—I'm surprised no one has done this before.  Misty Tripoli does a great job showing the basic steps and then leading pretty simple choreography.  Maybe this sounds boring, but it is not!  I felt completely comfortable 'dancing' the steps all around my room and working up quite a sweat.  The intensity is up to you.  I found that my workout time flew by!"

Beth (~INDYGIRL), SparkPeople member and dailySpark blogger
"This DVD is very engaging and the variety of movements was great. Most of the movements could be modified to suit one's needs while standing, or by sitting on a stability ball or in a chair if you have mobility issues. Even though the participants on screen were standing and moving more freely, they provide tons of great ideas for moving your body even if you have limitations or pain during exercise like I do."

Misty Tripoli's Body Groove: Delicious Dance retails for $39.99, but for a limited time (to coincide with this review) it will be available for just $19.95 on amazon.com. If this DVD sounds intriguing to you, I'd order now (or add it to your holiday wishlist) before the prices goes up again! I can't say enough good things about how amazing this DVD truly is!

I love it! Just went to order it as well. I can't "dance", but I love to move. I ordered the DVD collection, but I was provided with links to the videos as well. I can't wait to try it out tonight. - 9/27/2013   11:44:10 AM

I was really impressed - I actually also bought an additional collection of 4 dvds which combine the groove with pilates, yoga, and others. I find I use some of the moves throughout the day - when walking, when trying to stand back up after washing the dog when my back is really tight - I love the instructor"s style and attitude, and the freestyle is great for an old structured person like me! - 8/3/2012   8:54:05 AM

On your recommendation, I bought this. I work out at lunch with one or 2 friends in a conference room, and dont really consider myself coordinated or graceful. Although the workouts looked fun, I was nervous about feeling self-consious. Far from it! It was great! Also, my friend and I have very different fitness levels, and this was more flexible and amenable to fitting our different needs than any of the other things we tried. Thanks, Nicole!

Sold! I am buying this. I got choked up while dancing with the preview. I already want to thank this woman for reviving a childhood love for movement-- creating and experiencing movement with the joy of a child. Amazing! - 1/2/2012   11:51:15 AM

I did my first workout yesterday and loved it. Just finished my second one today and I'm sweating! I think I like this even better than Zumba???!!!! WOO double HOO!! - 12/31/2011   4:41:21 PM

I love the exercise style and philosophy! I tried the free videos and liked it so much I got the DVD for Christmas. I am really enjoying the freedom, the movement, and the idea that you don't have to be perfect. Body Groove is awesome! - 12/29/2011   9:44:29 PM

I got mine today and did the first workout. I can't dance. I have trouble moving both my feet and hands at the same time. I was terrible but did my best in the movements. I enjoyed the workout and at the end felt like I had really worked hard!

I'm looking forward to doing the next workout. - 12/23/2011   5:32:26 PM

I got this DVD in the mail yesterday and tried it this morning.

    I....LOVED....IT!!!!!

Misty's instruction is warm, (and way cool)! She is easy to listen to, gives helpful tips in a positive, encouraging, non-sappy way. I can't believe I had never heard of her before I read Coach Nicole's blog!

    I can't wait for tomorrow's workout! LOVE LOVE LOVE... - 12/20/2011   1:27:56 PM

My DW and I tried this. By the end we were laughing and just having a great time. I can see taking this to a party to let the whole group try this out. Cool - not the exercise - that'll warm you up, but the concept. - 12/16/2011   4:17:14 PM

I love this and I have ordered it plus her collection with yoga, patlite and more and at very good prices which I have to look for. Can't wait till it comes. I use to dance for a living way back when and I stayed just as trim and firm as can be. I want that back and this can do it. I will use it a lot. Winter in the house you can exercise but it is not the same as being out in the sun. This will put a new spin on it. That you for reviewing DVD's for us and letting us know what is good.. Have fun dancing. - 12/16/2011   2:26:51 PM

I got the collection for about $10. It looks like something great to do with my kids!! I've been looking for something we can do as a family and this looks perfect. - 12/16/2011   6:45:32 AM

You hooked me....I ordered it. INDYGIRL's recommendation sealed the deal for me. Since I use a walker and do most of my exercises seated, it sounds like I could do this...even seated. :) - 12/16/2011   1:40:19 AM

It looks like fun and I might try it for a change of pace but it's too easy to "cheat" by doing your own thing. Besides, learning an exercise or dance routine is not only good for the body, it stimulates the connections in the brain while you are learning. - 12/15/2011   12:35:08 AM

Looked like LOTS of fun and just for me cuz I am always messing up trying to keep my left and right in sync watching other dance workouts-- have copy ordered and looking forward to Grooving :) - 12/14/2011   11:09:08 PM

The website I went to, she's giving us 3 free videos (I'll need to download them and rip 'em to dvd)... I don't have a nice smooth floor like the video (all yukky carpet!!), but I'm gonna try this on my rebounder. I bet it will work just fine!! (Urban Rebounder team, you with me on this!!?). - 12/14/2011   9:36:24 PM

I didn't get past the preview! This looks so incredibly FUN! I agree with Nettie-Delgado's quote: "This time I cried with the freedom and love for my body the sample clip elicited in me, finished reading your review...Thanks for reviewing a DVD I can do NOW and which inspires each of us to love ourselves as we take care of our bodies." YES! - 12/14/2011   9:06:21 PM

I am out. Sorry but I watched the preview and it didn't do it for me. Just seems like another dance video and I rarely do home work-outs enough to invest in this one. - 12/14/2011   8:59:03 PM

Normally I *hate* dance-based workouts because I just feel too uncoordinated and can never seem to keep up, but this looks like FUN and something I can actually do! I love the free structure and the fact that you can make it more or less intense depending on how you feel that day. I think this will be a great addition to my workout library. I probably wouldn't have ordered it for $40, but for half off, it seems worth a try. I also ordered the Body Groove Complete Collection for $9.99 and qualified for free shipping! :-)

    Thanks, SparkPeople! - 12/14/2011   8:11:38 PM

So excited about this DVD! I probably wouldn't have ordered it at $40, but $20 I can do! It's coming on Monday and I'm super-psyched. As someone who focuses on biking, running, yoga and weights because my feet get so tangled up with dance workouts that I typically turn off the videos about 5 minutes in, this looks perfect! - 12/14/2011   6:06:35 PM

I'm intrigued by it - particularly the ballet-inspired segment. I may borrow it from the library first to see how I actually like using the program. - 12/14/2011   4:49:27 PM

I love dance and this looks like a great video. You can see the different body types and ability levels but everyone does their own thing and no one cares. That's how it should be. I like that you have a lot of movement choices to copy if you want because so many people are doing their own thing. I know a lot of dances but I'm not very graceful. This video would make you feel like a graceful dancer without actually having to be one! :)

I am lucky that at my cardio dance studio it's the same way. I mean, it's structured but it's just all for fun and no one cares what anyone else looks like. - 12/14/2011   3:22:54 PM

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I do all my workouts at home and avidly read all the DVD reviews you write. Most of them made me think "humm, that won't work for me at 334 pounds" and then I mentally file them away for when I am smaller. But not this time. This time I cried with the freedom and love for my body the sample clip elicited in me, finished reading your review, and jumped onto Amazon to buy this DVD. Thanks for reviewing a DVD I can do NOW and which inspires each of us to love ourselves as we take care of our bodies. - 12/14/2011   2:27:19 PM
