Before I went on my health kick about 2 years ago, I would drink probably 3-4 24 oz bottles of diet mt. dew every day along with 3-4 20 oz cups of coffee. I have since cut way back, I drink no soda pop what so ever and allow myself only one cup of coffee a day. I have found that I can focus much easier, have a clearer memory, and don't get the afternoon "nods." I'm not sure it if it is the caffeine reduction or the elimination of the other chemical in the diet pop but one way or the other...

I am up at 550 AM every day,I have tried water,I usually have a diet moutain dew,not the smartest but its about progress not perfection.

Thanks, Armsports. I do realize that a good diet goes a long way, but there is just something about those hours in class that can put a person with insomnia to sleep. I drink Crystal Light Energy. I agree that the risks of caffeine are WAY overstated. Just curious what other people use.
The risks of caffeine have been greatly exaggerated. If you have heart rhythm abnormalities, gastric ulcers, or such things you should consult with your physician first. But it has been shown to enhance both muscular strength and aerobic capacity if ingested before workouts, as well as a multitude of nuerostimulatory effects which can be beneficial. I would suggest using coffee or tea as opposed to energy drinks because of the plethora of additional ingredients in those products. I know I use caffeine every day and wouldn't function as well without it.

Being a medical student you should know that you do not need caffeine, eating an apple will wake you up also. If you get the proper foods you will have the energy you need to go through the day. You just have to pack it yourself and stay away from the vending machines...lol
