Welcome and you are so right...we are all in this and can use SP to our advantage. It is a wonderful site full of valuable information and wonderful people. I love checking in daily and seeing everyone's successes...and sometimes non-success..because it makes me feel like I'm not alone in my success or bad week (or so). I was always thin until I had my fifth child at 41 and didn't lose the weight, then became peri-menopause and after my hysterectomy at 48, I packed on 40# in one winter. So, I know what you are dealing with. Read Gary Taubes' "WHY WE GET FAT AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT." He agrees with Dr. Mercola that it is sugars/starches that make our INSULIN spike and adds on the pounds.
I can't imagine a life where I never worried about my weight until I was in my 50's. But you are in luck (now that you are in the same boat as most of us) that there is info now that helps you diet correctly. For most of my life you dieted totally wrong, without a thought to "a healthy way to lose", you didn't even know better than to do a crash diet. Now with all the internet info, and especially Sparks you can diet for the first time in your life "the right way".

I was always the skinny girl. When I turned 50, my weight started to rise. I celebrated my 54 th birthday and it's time to take control of my health and weight. I need to lose 25 lbs.
