take one day at a time don't look at your past look at your future ... what motivates you ? look at your life and ask yourself that .. for me is swimming and dancing ... so I dance in a chair stand for a few sit and dance music does something to me find something that does you that way .. Then ask yourself do I want to live ? because being unhealthy is not living trust me I know .... you can do this ... take one day at a time ... no-more don't look back look forward ...

I'm curious - have you been to Puerto Rico yet?

We just got back from our week-long vacation in Boston (I'm a girl from the south) and it was great. Never before have I been on vacation and lost weight!!! I was down 2.5 pounds. I focused on all the wonderfully fresh seafood (grilled) that they have available just about everywhere. I even had a CUP (not bowl) of the New England Clam Chowder, twice. I always ate salad first and filled up on the low calorie stuff first, and we walked alot.

I've been to Puerto Rico and know they have great seafood too. That's a great benefit to you. If you get to walk around that will also be great. And think how good you'll feel about yourself when it's over.... you'll know you made good choices and it is very satisfying!

Even on vacation I tracked everything I ate. I mean everything! That is such a big deal to me and I find it keeps me accountable. I tracked a handfull of peanuts at the Red Sox game, but my choice for supper was a turkey wrap, not a giant hot dog and fries - although if I'd made those choices I'd have tracked them too.

So I know you can do it. Also eat slowly and believe it or not you do fill up faster. But most of all know the purpose of losing weight isn't just for now, but for EVER. Which means "YES" we'll always have to make healthy choices. I know my calorie range and I fit it all in that range, but right now I know that for me SUGAR triggers my binges. So I stay away from sugar! Whatever it takes is what I'll do - and I know you will too.

If your husband is supportive that's great - mine is sometimes! But I've gotten to where I tell him "NO - i'm not wasting my calories on ______". Or "I'll not Drink my calories, but eat something I enjoy that is healthy". On vacation I even watched him eat ice cream, lots of peanuts, over indulge on everything, and I decided he was testing me. He really wanted to see if I meant it!!! YEP I do, and I told him he could come along with me to a healthier life or I'd just leave him behind. I don't mean I'd leave him literally. He needs to lose about 50 pounds - and we have been married 44 years, so that'd never happen - but yes I'm doing this for ME!

I'm reading and studying this book I'm reading. It's called DIE FAT or GET TOUGH. I wish it had been around 30 years ago. I weigh more than you and am a pre-diabetic taking medication to keep my A1C at normal level. There are so many ups and downs in life and I've been through them all too. This book is so easy to read in one way, the way it's written, but it is very blunt and I guess that's what I needed. It uses words like "FAT", "DIET", both of which I've truly avoided using for so long. But you know, It is what it is! I've discovered that I AM the only one I can do this for - just me and no one else. Making a DECISION to stay healthy, making healthy choices takes away the fear of failure. It gives you the freedom to enjoy life and be what you are supposed to be. It enables you to forgive yourself for all the past failures, and if you are lucky you have learned from them.

So don't give up! Dig down deep, make the decision to make healthy choices and get healthy. You can do it.

Just had another 8 day derailment!!
Had to take my hubby to ER on Monday June 4. We had only been home 4 days from a 9 day stay earlier!! We just got back home this Monday night. Talking about losing all hope!!
I just can't discipline myself in a hospital room. In another city, waiting on Drs. and nurses, techs, etc I find myself sitting and eating (not healthy I might add).
But once again I'm back home and I'm picking back up. That's all I know to do!!!

It was nice reading all these posts. For the most part I'm doing fairly well with my life. Everything's going along nicely then BOOM a derailment. That's when I get out of kelter. I've been really down on myself last few days because I allowed myself to fall into a "pit".
But reading what you guys had to say has gotten me climbing back up and I WILL get back on track. emoticon

At times I feel the same way, I hate looking in the mirror. But remember, when there are downs, there are ups too.

Take one day at a time and try making healthier choices for yourself. You will succeed !

I am constantly trying to do the same for myself and at times I falter and feel very down but I have to get up and try again for myself because I am worth it and YOU ARE WORTH IT !!!! emoticon

I was having a similar problem getting and staying on track again after having gotten to where I wanted to be and then gaining back most of the weight I lost by forgetting that healthy living was lifelong and dealing with stress by eating too much and not exercising. I would start exercising for a week or two and then not for three or more weeks and then do that again. I know what to do but I couldn't get it going. So I came up with a method that has been helping me that I thought I'd share. I decided to do a visual reminder on my wall calendar and check it off every week and re-evaluate set new goals for the next week. That has kept me going with it for the past month or so and it is easier to get back at it after a day that I didn't meet all the goals I had I'd add them to the next week. Just a technique that has been helping me be consistent--I also am not weighing at this point just doing what I need to do exercising and eating in my calorie range--it takes a long time to lose weight and I don't want that to be my main focus! Good luck!

I donnotnlike journaling and I have a hard time being consistant. I may never log food like some people can and I totally do not get the calories counting like some can. My motivation dropped when I went through empty nest. Ill tellnyou though some days I just set my timer to go off every thirty minutes or so and then move around for anset amount of minutes. I do glue pictures (or Scotch tape) in a notebook that I cut from magazines and it Helsinki to lift me up some.

The story about Mrs. Cindy that I shared (with her consent) on one of my blots also inspires me. She was almost 300 lbs. and in a wheelchair ~ 1 year ago. I now go to her Monday classes that she teaches Zumba Gold in.

I am a type 2 diabetic and I did what you you are doing for twenty years and just let them increase my medication as I didn't change my life. At some point you will find that they can't increase the medication but will change it and you'll start having side effects from the medications. Finally, I decided I was tired of being tied to a bunch of pills and started altering my life style and lost 50 pounds and 8 inches in my waist. I down to one medicine at a reduced amount from what I was taking 15 years ago and feel much better. It doesn't mean that I am perfect and still don't have a good ways to go. Going one week in control is better than not doing anything and just work on making that one week stretch into two and have your lapses be for a day rather than a week. Exercise is important but find something you truly enjoy. For me that has been racquetball and golf, which has caused me to enjoy doing other activities (cardio and strength training) that help in the sports that I love. Hang in there and just work on persistence. I don't know if this is a problem for you but when I decided to quit drinking alcohol, my ability to stay on track was greatly increase.

Hope really means expectation. Keep up with the expectation that this really is possible, no matter how many times you have lost the same weight. I felt hopeless a few days ago. Alot of spark friends responded and I realized that others have done this and are doing it and I can to. Expect it to happen; and do what it takes to make it happen. emoticon

Sometimes life throws you curve balls, far too much stress, and you feel like your life is spiraling out of control. Here is what gets me through the hopeless times: Me, my body, my nutrition, my exercise habits, my peace of mind - these are all things in my life that I DO have control over. I sit and just breathe. I remind myself that I am where I'm supposed to be in life and that I am a good person. I have control over what food I put in my mouth and how many miles I put on the treadmill. It hasn't been easy at times, but I'm much more at ease with myself when I concentrate on the positive things in my life, things I can control. And there you have it.

mymymy I think your my twin....Sometimes it feels as though there are no real answers.
I'v lost the same weight over and over again. The same 7 lbs....Not going anywhere.
Do you think we need to start using our brains differently ? Its all up there I think on how we feel about ourselves. My problem is though, I'm my worse enemy...
I would like to lose 80 lbs.... Been there done that before.. We all know how to do it, we just dont.... Not sure of what the answer really is.... But please never give up... Even though I still lose the same weight over and over again I still dont give up, because I figured one of these days I'm going to get it right...... emoticon

emoticon I was in San Juan a few weeks ago. Believe me you can eat healthy there. When I travel with my DH, we usually share a meal and get an extra salad. Lots of times we just get the appetizers and share. We try to eat our bigger meal at lunch, that way we can do some sightseeing and walking in the afternoon and work it off. Where we were staying people would come in and dance, anywhere there was an open space they were dancing. Also everywhere you went outside people were running or walking, they have beautiful beaches to walk on. Go down to the Old San Juan and walk around, you will be climbing up and down the streets. Go to the Rain Forest.

I do a lot of traveling with my DH, because of his work. So we do eat out a lot. If you know what you want to go, pull up their menus and decide what you want to eat. Write it out,exactly how you want it and then don't take a menu, hand the server your list and ask for them to put half of it in-a-to-go-box for you in the kitchen. If sometimes you want a dessert share one with your DH, eat a few bites and let him finish it. Like I said have your bigger meal at noon and a very light meal in the evening.

In 14 days I go on a family vacation, a cruise to the Panama Canal. Talk about food flowing.
I plan on eating healthy, taking the stairs, my DH and I walk around the ship on deck whenever we can. I try to stick to more proteins and vegetables and just a few healthy carbs, and take my grandchildren (4 & 16 months) on plenty of walks.

It can be done, it just takes planning ahead. Go to dinner with your DH and have a go time, but remember you don't have to eat a lot of food or have empty calories to have a good time.

HI Lanzam, Congrats for staying on track yesterday!

It is possible to stay on your meal and exercise plans while on vacation or dining out - but it is more difficult. So ask yourself if you are ready to handle those challenges. If not, then consider alternatives: a lovely dinner at home prepared together with your loved one(s).

If you must travel, plan ahead and take what you need with you. I take my exercise DVDs and laptop so that I can get a workout done no matter where I am. I think out the food options that will be available and jot down what my meal plan will be for the whole day so that I do not feel at the mercy of whatever restaurant food there might be. Check out the Spark articles on dining out.

And most of all, do not give up on you!

I was going to post the same idea that KYRSTINRO posted...about finding a buddy - either online or in person. Pairing up with someone reaching for the same goals as you are can be a HUGE help! Not only that, but it gives you someone to talk with, too. Depression is a tough dynamic to throw into the mix. I've been there. When you are depressed, sometimes NOTHING motivates you. Try to seek out a healthy, exterior motivation when it doesn't come from within. For me, more often than not, it's been music. But there are other things, too. Hang in there! My mantra for many months has been: One day at a time...baby steps if you have to. :-) Good luck!

Hey Lanzam, you're on the right track with setting attainable goals and celebrating your successes. I say never turn down a dinner invitation, go and enjoy time with your husband! I find when eating out I try to order appealing items listed on the calorie reduced or heart healthy menu sections. Also, portion size is important...if the plate is too full give some away to someone (enjoy 3 shrimp instead of 6).

And when on vacation try to keep active as someone else suggested, explore the area on foot. Also don't be afraid to eat some low calorie healthy snacks throughout the day...this way you'll not be so ravenous at mealtimes.

Hang in there and enjoy your evening out with your husband and weekend with your friend. These are the relationships that make life worth living! emoticon

Have not been actively involved with SP for some time now...work took over....am now trying (again- probably the 6th time) to exercise and eat better...it's difficult now as I'm in process of losing my home and my job....am holding on to my personal mantra (NGUNS) Never Give Up! Never Surrender!

I'll in Italy and Greece for 2 weeks in March and I went on vacations before and while i was on Spark.

The rule of thumb is to eat half of what they put in the plate. Also, you can order grilled meat (which is healthier) with salads. sea food is good for you ;)

Don't worry about a weekend in Puerto Rico. Enjoy, walk as much as you can, drink water in between bites and try not to eat too much

At home we don't go out much. On vacations, we hardly ever go to restaurants; i prefer to buy from the markets ; but it has happened to go to various places (i.e pubs in London, for example).

After 12 km walk in the city, a meal in a restaurant is hardly a problem :)

Well, someone yesterday said that I should make Daily goals...so I did....and I met them! It does feel good and I believe she was correct....I need to make Dailiy goals as opposed to long-term goals.

But now I am faced with going to Puerto Rico for the weekend to visit a friend and my husband would like to take me out to dinner since we will not see each other for a few days. (1) How do you manage "vacations" and (2) what to do when eating out? Eating out is such a huge part of my life. We enjoy it. I realize that I will need to cook more and my husband is very supportive of that but should I go tonight or tell him no? :-(

MSDEBBI is right. Beating yourself up won't help you to make positive changes.

You've already received great advice from the other posters. I just wanted to add that you have to find out what works best for you. There's lots of information available on Spark and from other sources, but if something doesn't work for you then it's not likely to be successful. Whatever your strategies are, they have to fit in with your life.

I love to work out first thing in the morning. It's quiet time for me when no one else is awake, and I can exercise and quiet my mind. A good friend of mine also runs, but she works out with a running club. I would hate working out in a group like that, and she would hate running by herself on a treadmill. We've each found a way that works for us, to do the same thing.

Find out what works for you. You might have to try a bunch of things first, but please don't give up. It's a journey.

I read somewhere "Beating yourself up about your appearance and putting yourself down is the last thing that motivates healthy lifestyle change."

Maybe its time to put everything down on paper, and then you can see where you are falling short. Once you know what you are doing wrong, then you can replace the wrong ways with the right ways, write those ways down. Pick one and work are it till it feels just like second nature to do it, and then work on the next one, and so forth till you have replaced the bad with the good. Its not easy, no one said it would be, but I can tell you this from experience.

If you don't do it now, the snowball will only get bigger. And you will be my age (59) and still feeling those love hate thoughts above yourself. How do I know? Because that's me, I'm still fighting my weight problem and believe me it doesn't get easier the older you get.

You people are inspiring. My problem is depression. When depressed I eat. I do okay for a while and then it hits me. I'm on meds but do not like them.I lose a few pounds then gain them right back. It's very discourging.

Believe me, I know all about depression and my diet wasn't helping the situation at all.

I hate to say it, but you will not see immediate results. If that were a reality, none of us would be on Spark. About a year ago, I couldn't even jump. I couldn't do jumping jacks...heck, I couldn't do anything! I don't know how much I weighed because I didn't weigh myself because it was depressing and discouraging. I used my fitness level as a gauge instead. Now, a little under a year later, I can run a mile in a little bit under 8 minutes. Last year I couldn't even hold myself up in the plank position to do a push-up, let alone actually do one. Now I can, I can do a lot but the whole point of this is I had to start.

When I was 10 years old, my mother had an aneurysm. My life totally changed. It was filled with a lot of sadness and stress because of all of my mother's health issues. Knowing how I felt as a child, I promised not to do that to my kids...but that's all I did was promise. I didn't do anything else. It wasn't until I went to the doctor with a BP of 164/110 I made the decision to change, and I did.

I have my health issues, too. I have a disorder that affect the integrity of my collagen. I have broken so many bones and had a lot of dislocations. My skin and arteries are very fragile so I can have an aneurysm, too. I also have scoliosis. Soooo, what makes all that worse? You've guess it! Being overweight. Just like diabetes, if you were to look at me you wouldn't know any of these things. So, in my mind I neglected to take care of myself because I didn't look like anything was wrong with me. My son is more severe than I am, and by me not taking care of myself is teaching him to do the same, and that's not fair to him.

So, the moral of the story is, if I can do it, so can you!! If you didn't track your food today and didn't drink your 4 glasses of water, well, tomorrow scale it back. Say you'll drink one glass of water and track breakfast at least. Then once you do that, make your next goal. Sometimes you have to do it minute by minute and that's OK. But once you get going you will feel awesome, I promise you that, and that is just about immediate because you'll a sense of accomplishment. Once I started eating right and exercising, the depression went away. You have to start somewhere and you can do it!

Great job! Those are excellent goals to aspire to for today. And all of the above comments offer wonderful advice. I must say, I agree that exploring the blogs and SparkPages of other members is a great way to find some additional motivation, and an "if they can do it, I can do it!" attitude. The members nominated as "Motivators of the Day" or "Motivational Members" are always listed in the Community section, and I would DARE you (goodnaturedly, of course) to read one of their stories and not feel inspired! :) If you need suggestions . . . VADAVICTORIA, JENN245, JENSFITJOURNEY, BOOKWORM27S, ~INDYGIRL, and SHRINKINGLULU all come to mind. Guaranteed, you will find someone you relate to and who inspires you. Many members have been exactly where you have been, some are just starting out as well. Another great way to find inspiration is to join a Team or a Challenge (or a Team Challenge), both in the Community section.
Don't be shy! There are thousands of members waiting to give you a boost when you need one, a reality check when you're being silly, advice on exactly what to do or where to start, anything you need. No one here will judge you or think badly of you for being overweight, for struggling, or for any obstacle you encounter. Promise! :)

Thanks everyone! Your words are very inspiring! I guess I get discouraged easlily because I want to see results immediately and when I don't I fall off the wagon. Baby steps.....right? Well today I made a promise to myself to start tracking my food intake and drinking at least 4 glasses of water a day. Up to now I didn't do either....

find a buddy, whether "live" or on Sparkpeople
make small goals and congratulate yourself for hitting them
for example:

take a calendar (the one which allows to write in the box of the day). and get some star stickers (or what you like). then make a list of 3 things to do each day; for example:
1. eat 4 servings of veggies
2. walk for 10 min
3. don't eat in front of the tv

if you've done all three , put a star on your calendar. when you'll see the stars adding up, you'll fell proud!

remember, it takes 21 days to create a new habit (or brake an old one). so, don't expect changes from the first week; they do happen but they won't show on your ...but you WILL feel them later. trust me on this one

most important: CREATE SMALL, achievable goals.

There IS always hope ! No matter how bad you think your life is, things CAN get better. You just have to be ready to take a little initiative. Many of us here on Spark have been where you are. Twice in my life, I've weighed over 200+ pounds. At my highest, I was around 240. I can't tell you how many times I've lost and regained.

Well, a few years ago, I decide enough was enough and I wanted to make a change. If you check out my Spark Page, you can read the long boring story. LOL !! The point is, I decided to make a change in my life and I can't be more pleased.

Start with simple changes. Don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated. Remember, you're trying to change habits learned over a life time. that's not going to happen overnight, a week, a month or even a year. Change takes time. Thus the need to be patient with yourself and your body.

What to do first ? When is the last time you had a physical ? If you haven't had a physical in a long time, definitely start there. get all your starting numbers. don't be afraid to talk to your doctor. they are there to help you. A person should always consult their doctor before starting to exercise or change their diet. Once you're doctor has given you the all clear, start with those simple changes.

Set some goals. If you're not used to eating 6-9 servings of fresh fruit and veggies each and every day. Set a goal to eat 2-3 servings each day for one week. If you're not used to drinking 8 glasses of water, then set a goal to drink 2-4 glasses each day for one week. If you're not used to regular exercise, set a goal to water for 30 minutes each day for one week. when you've achieved these goals, you create some new goals.

You don't have to do anything drastic to start. This isn't the Biggest Loser. Most people can't spend all day just trying to lose weight. That's why we must be patient. start with some simple changes you can stick with and build from there.

Read some of the Spark articles on nutrition, well being, exercise, fitness, health, etc... the more you learn, the better informed you will be !

I think the fact that you're here and posting this means that you haven't lost ALL hope. Good for you for posting this. It's a good sign that you really don't want to be stuck in the cycle.

I started SP countless times. I started the first time in 2008. This time, it's working. Why now? Who knows? But I didn't give up and neither will you.

Instead of focusing on how far you have to go, make your goals VERY short. For TODAY (just today) use the nutrition tracker and put down everything you eat and for TODAY decide to do 10 minutes of exercise. Make that your goal. Tomorrow, you may set a new goal for tomorrow or you may not, but for now focus on now.

You can do it TODAY.

Hi, There is always hope and I believe you can find yours again. I saw from your Spark teams that you are dealing with depression and you indicate that you are diabetic. I know from personal experience that both of these conditions can cause you to feel like there are no good options, no solutions. I hope that you have found some help to address the depression because even short term treatment can make a difference.

I hope that you can start to give yourself credit for being part of the Spark community and reaching out for help.

My best advice is to take very small steps. Each small step really will build on the last one. Find the thing that makes you feel better and keep doing that. For me, it has been walking while listening to upbeat music. I started out being able to walk 100-200 steps. Now I am up to 1.5 miles and am still going. For you it might be journaling your feelings each day or drinking water or going to the gym.

I'm sorry you are going through this Lanzam. Goodness knows, no matter how much weight we have to lose, that we all go through this. I have found a lot of inspiration in reading PinkHope's blogs. She also has a lot of weight to lose, and writes beautifully about her experiences, and advice. Instead of taking it one week at a time, take it a minute, hour, day at a time. Realize that you are a human being, and that you are not controlled by impulse and urge. Also remind yourself that when you start establishing those healthy habbits, it will be easier to follow them and make more. emoticon

I don't know that I have any great advice, I just wanted to tell you that I am struggling with the same thing. I know what to do and sometimes I make the right decisions. I just need to keep myself accountable and make the right decision more often. Like everyone on here says, its a journey. So I'm trying to take it one step and one decision at a time. I praise myself for good decision and reflect on the bad to see what I can do next time to make a smarter choice. And you can't let one bad decision before a whirlpool- you have to let it go and make a smarter one the next time.

You're aware of the challenges you face which I would think is a great first step. I think you have to take it one decision at a time. I don't know if it will help but I find that when I force myself to track a food BEFORE it enters my mouth, I make smarter decision (because I can see how the calories effect my daily balance before I eat it rather than after). Also, if I enter my intended workout at the beginning of the day, I am more likely to follow through because it stinks to have to go in and delete it.

I don't know if any of this helps but its gotten me to make better decisions a little more often. Hang in there, take it one decision at a time and I'm sure you will be able to get yourself on the right track full time.

I am completely out of control. I am a T2 diabetic, weigh 210 lbs. and for some reason I cannot get myself committed to eating better or excercising. I am not consistent. I do great for a week and then I go right back to doing nothing about my situation. Why? I can't figure out why I do this to myself. I know what to do...really...I know I need to make better meal choices, control my portions and get moving. I am so sad and down in the dumps.....I feel lost.....
