Happy to hear that you are on your way to mending your mind. I liked the suggestion of talking to someone professional about what you feel that you are missing. We all need a little help from time to time, so don't be embarassed! If it were free, we'd all accept therapy! Or maybe just a journal will help so you can look back after a month or so and read what you were thinking last month. Sometimes it helps to step back and see where you were mentally in your recent past. There are patterns that may become apparent, or you could even see yourself winning the battle!

Hopped on the scale this morning, which I never do 2 days in a row & gained another 8 oz. So, today, I am heading to the SP meal guides & have made up my meals for the day. I admit, when I see that one meal alone is almost 500 calories I want to panic... but I can do this.

The stupid thing is, I WAS doing this. In January when I started losing my 48#, I was using the SP menus & then something happened inside my brain that shut off the need for calories.

I'm heading back on track. We'll see how this progresses. :)

Thanks, Ladies. I've probably read your messages 3 times today just to keep on the up & up. I eat avacodos on every salad.. a total of about 4 whole ones a week. Yum. I could eat them like butter & actually do mash them up as a 'dip" with a little garlic.

I can't swallow nuts because of the puking issues I've had in the past. When I was on my heart meds, I would get violently ill if I drank anything other than water & so, I only drink water. About 300 oz a day. Not kidding. I can't stomach milk of any type anymore.

I think I'd like to try the chocolates. Maybe some choco covered nuts, but blended up a little.

And, really? Cottage cheese with honey, blueberries & cinnamon, all in 1 bowl? I think I'll pick some up this weekend.

I never eat corndogs or cereal.. today was a first in a few years. But, its almost bed time & I'm only at 742 calories for the day,. And, I even ate.

I think seeing a dietician is a good idea.

Your mind is telling you that you can "live off your fat", but your body is trying to keep you alive. Your body is going to hold on to those fat reserves if it thinks you are in for a long period of deprivation. Even people who have starved to death still have body fat.

Have you tried adding nuts to your diet? They will provide you with protein and good fats and a few extra calories. Since they are a clean food, you can probably slip them in without feeling like "poo." Also, the fats in the nuts help you get the nutrients out of your fruits and vegetables, so it's a win-win.

Eating fresh fruits and veggies for 90% of your diet is awesome. The fact that you have gotten healthy enough to get off of your heart meds is awesome. The fact that you are no longer throwing up is awesome. It sounds like you have come a long way.

Some of the things I eat:

Eggs (scrambled, etc for brkfst and also hard boiled for other times), Avocado (usually 1/2 of one at a time - 160 cal), almonds, almond milk (for you, prob not the 35 cal version - get the higher cal kind), almond butter (Justins Maple/Almond or Choc / Almond..Mmm!),whole wheat bagel thins, cheese (Baby Bells are great for portability), some atkins products (l-o-v-e the cinn oatmeal fiber bars), I eat meat as well as Amy's vegetarian burgers, ground turkey, tons of veggies and fruit. Cottage cheese (I opt for fat-free to kind of balance other things I eat w/ fat in them,) greek yogurt. And chocolate!! Lots of sugar-free dark chocolate (See's; Amberlynn; Hersheys); you could do non-sugar free dark choc covered almonds to get you some calorie dense yet healthful nutrition, etc. Drizzle some honey over cottage cheese, blueberries & roasted almonds & sprinkle some cinnamon on it. Heaven!!

You do not have to eliminate entire food groups. I eat sweet potatoes / yams all the time. Those are veggies and considered starches. Big difference between that and a bag of Lays or Cheetos (though really, you can have those, too, if you portion them out & acct for it). Make your own healthier version of sweet potato fries or have it baked.

I eat ice cream or gelato, but I measure out a 1/2 cup at a time. You can eat anything - just be mindful of portions and IMO, eating clean most of the time (which you do) affords you a splurge here and there of something else (processed, dessert, whatever).

Have you explored Spark Recipes? They are the bomb!!! And the cookbook, too!

I am so glad you are going to eat more (no trying - just DO). You obviously know the perils that befall you when you starve yourself.

One thing I will tell you: your metabolism could be out of whack so it may take time to normalize things. Make sure you get enough sleep (hard for anyone w/ kids I know).

My last suggestion: don't use a scale. At least for a while (couple mos minimum). Go by how your clothes fit.

And if it all seems overwheling and you feel like you can't do it, you need to seek help from more qualified people other than your Spark friends. But know we ARE rooting for you!!

I would start by focusing on whole, unprocessed foods so that you get the most nutrition bang for your buck (nothing against cereal and corndogs...). I eat nonfat greek yogurt with fruit on it and a tablespoon of chopped walnuts for breakfast, maybe a squeeze of honey. Or a slice of whole grain toast with a tablespoon of peanut butter and a sliced banana on it. Or oatmeal (not instant) with milk on it and some frozen blueberries. Lunch is always a big, colorful salad with some form of protein - 3-4 ozs. leftover chicken breast, or a few hard boiled eggs, or 3-4 oz. leftover cold salmon, or 3-4 ozs. caned tuna. Dinner might be brown rice and tofu with veggies and a sauce, or baked chicken and a sweet potato and a green "something" - steamed spinach, zucchini, etc. Desert might be a sugar free pudding cup or two squares of dark chocolate and maybe a little popcorn.

Eating whole foods sends a big message to your body thatyou are going to start respecting it TODAY. You may tend to eat the same calorie restricted things every day and you need to start mixing it up right now to get a better blend of nutrients. Hard as this is for you, I would suggest that you STOP COUNTING CALORIES. Sorry for the capital letters but you need to focus on eating healthy and not on losing weight. The weight will come off when you send the message to your body that you are going to start taking care of it.

The other posters are correct that you need to eat much more food and give yourself permission. If you are finding it difficult to add in more calories, stop focusing on calories and focus on your hunger. You may be "hungry" for something other than food entirely and are afraid that if you just eat for hunger, you'll go out of your mind, eat like crazy and gain weight. Being hungry for something else in your life - friends, true companionship, peace and quiet, a mate, a kind word, relief from the torment and mistakes of your early life, time in nature - may need to be worked out with a professional.

Right now, however, try to stop torturing yourself with food, or the withholding of it. Focus on healthy eating of whole, unprocessed foods, balance of protein and vegetables and fruit and whole grains, stress reduction (when was the last time you took a deep breath?) learning about nutrition from a reputable source, like articles on SP. Recognizing that you have a mental problem (like most of us here!) around food is the first step to getting better for good. You can do this. Be honest with yourself and (not to be too harsh) stop playing games with food.

You have reached out for help and advice and now you have work to do. Go buy some fresh fruits and vegetables and lean protein and whole grains! Be kind to yourself today, just for this one hour. You matter and you deserve to treat yourself better, you know, like your best friend would treat you.

Have you ever considered being referred to a dietitian ? Since you have had previous medical issues, you may need a professional opinion to help craft a nutrition plan. It doesn't hurt to ask your doctor for a referral.

Do you eat cereal for breakfast ? If you don't want to drink milk, you could try soy milk, almond or even rice milk instead. Add a handful of blueberries for some extra anti oxidants. You may even want to try one of the Kashi cereals. those are good sources of fiber.

I really appreciate all of the information & you said it in a way I can understand. I'm surprised that being over weight, that my body would even get the notion that I'm in "starvation" mode. You'd think it could live off my fat for months.

I had a physical done about 6 months ago. Had all of my work done.. went off all of my heart meds. Life is good in that aspect.

But, you're probably right.. what's getting me is my train of thought. I hate adding in those calories.

Thanks for all of the information. I'm going to try to eat more. I DO eat very clean.. In fact, 90% of what I eat is fresh, organic fruits & veggies. The main reason I have so few calories. I don't really know HOW to eat right.

When I was eating 1 apple a day, I was also throwing it up. I guess that never leaves you.. the mind set I mean. A fat girl needing to eat more.. who'd have thunk it? lol.

Normally for meals, I would have fit yogurt for breakfast, carrots & hummus for lunch & a big salad for dinner with a few snacks in between. I don't eat starches, I don't drink anything but water & I rarely eat meat. thus, the low calories.. (and we rarely, if ever, go out to eat).

I am a heart patient. Messed up my heart when I was puking my guts out & burned a hole in my esophagus. I was taking 4 heart pills, 4 times a day since I was 17. I had a mild heart attack at the age of 31. Now, I'm 38 & just had my 4th baby & am off all meds.

Today, I had a bowl of special K for breakfast (no milk.. yuck) and a corndog for lunch. I'm at 450 calories which is more than I've eaten at all in 2 meals for as long as I can remember. Baby steps.

Can you guys give me some ideas on what you eat? I have done the SP menus but didn't get into them because of the calorie intake. My calorie thing on here says between 1200 & 1500 a day.. but it also suggests I work out 90 minutes a week & I usually do about 6 hours.

STOP TRYING TO KILL YOURSELF.

Listen to the advice given to you. They know what they are talking about. I was going sometimes 2 days without eating and not losing weight. Here's the basics.... you can't lose what you don't have, and starving your body is telling it that it can't have sustenance.

Follow the program and you can't lose! Or you CAN lose, it will just be pounds!!!

Hi SUMMERDAWNE.

Oh man! You gotta EAT more, my friend!

I remember all the times in my youth when I'd "go on a diet" and severely limit my calories (or try to). It was torture and I was miserable! WHY wouldn't I lose weight despite all my efforts?! No WONDER I got so frustrated and quit; and like clockwork, the weight would come back.

Flash forward to now, at the ripe age of 50, and I finally get it! I eat waaay more than anyone would ever guess and I have lost weight!!

1200 is the minimum you should eat, and that is if you are not active. You are active and need even more. Have you tried inputting your weight to get a calorie range from Spark? Mine was 1200-1550 and I always ate at the high end and very often over (figuring if it takes me a bit longer, I didn't care! I was just DONE w/ diets and misery).

Please, please, please: you are doing yourself and those who love you a disservice by not fueling your body & mind properly. Sounds like you have a big family who needs you.
Maybe you need to try adding in nutritional foods in slowly...some good fats like avocado, olive oil, nuts, etc. The veggies really help keep things under control for me.

If you just can't bring yourself to do it, it may be time to seek outside help. Think of it this way: would you only feed your kid 700 calories a day?? Probably not. And you're a grown woman w/ lots of responsibilities & obligations AND you are very physically active so you NEED to give yourself more nutrition.
As another poster stated, you could be in for worse down the road if you don't get a handle on this.

Hang in there. Try to eat more good, clean, nutritious food.

Hi, SUMMERDAWNE !!

I really do have to agree with the others who've replied. You're STARVING your body of the calories it needs to be healthy. I know you may have lost weight that way when you were a teenager, but it wasn't a healthy way to lose weight. and the fact is, you're not a teenager any more. Pregnancy changes a woman's body. So, you have to stop thinking like a teen age dieter. That's the reason you're not losing.

I know this is going to sound strange, but a person has to eat in order to lose weight. Starving doesn't work because you're trained your body to "conserve" fat every time you've gone on a diet. this is why you can't lose. Your body doesn't care if you're on a diet or not. All your body cares about is having enough calories to keep your vital organs functioning each day. By cutting your calories so drastically, you've forced your body to decide which is more important... having calories to do an hour of exercise each day OR having calories to keep your heart, lungs and brain functioning. Right now, your body is conserving any fat it has to keep your heart pumping.

If you want to lose weight, you've got to eat. Why ? Once again because your body needs calories just to be able to lie in bed thinking. when you get out of bed and start moving around, your body needs even more calories to provide you with energy.

food = energy and no food = no energy.

You may be energetic right now, but I can assure you that if you continue to eat this way, you're going to end up in dreadful health. The food you eat should not only provide energy (fuel) for your day's activities, it should also nourish your body. Because good health starts from the inside out. when your insides are healthy, that reflects on your outsides.

Let me ask a question, when is the last time you had a full physical ? The first thing you should do is get a full physical with all the blood work done. Find out what your blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, etc... People assume that losing weight will help them become healthier. Unfortunately, there are some very unhealthy ways to lose weight that will damage your health more so than being overweight. Starving can seriously damage a person's health. That's why I'm going to encourage you to eat more as well as get a check up with your doctor.

You can lose weight in a healthy manner, but it really does mean learning some new healthier methods. It also means that you won't dramatic losses. At best, you might lose 1-2 pounds per week. This isn't the Biggest Loser. Most people do not lose that kind of weight. What happens when they do ? They regain all the weight !!

Think about Oprah Winfrey. She's a billionaire ! She has access to the best dietitians, chefs, personal trainers, doctors, etc... she still has problems with her weight. Remember when she lost over 67 pounds with that liquid diet ? What happened afterwards ? She regained all the weight with extra.

That's why you've got to stop starving yourself. You need to learn some healthy habits to lose the weight. And that will take time. You didn't gain the weight overnight. It's not coming off overnight.

Summer,

Firstly, you must eat to lose. Think of food as the gas that keeps the car running. If you do not fill up the tank, eventually the car will quit running. However, with your body, when you don't eat enough to sustain normal biological functioning (regulating body temp and heart rate, growing new cells, repairing damaged muscle, etc) your body will begin to breakdown lean body mass (we're talking muscle, bone, connective and organ tissue) to get the calories it needs just to keep your body functioning. Over time this loss of lean body mass will further slow your metabolism as this is the metabolically active tissue...the one that keeps the fire burning, so to speak.

While upping your calories may slow your progress down, just know that studies are showing that those who lose 5% of their body weight over a 3 month period of time are more successful at keeping the weight off versus those people who lose it much faster.

How are you measuring your calories expended? The reason I ask is that is a lot of calories to expend for just 6 hours of week of exercise. I just completed 3 weeks of base marathon training running well over 100 miles and I only expended 9200 calories for the entire 3 weeks. To burn over 1000 calories in an hour may be an overestimation.

As far as your headache and slight dizziness, if you are not eating enough your blood sugar may be dropping, but you will need to talk with your doctor about that.

The moral of the story is, do you see yourself living this way for the rest of your life? Most people will not be able to do this, so by focusing on making this a journey of healthy living and not just a quick means to get the weight off, you will be well on your way to a healthy lifestyle.

You're not eating enough. You're starving yourself. As a result, your body is rebelling by holding onto the weight and giving you headaches and dizziness. Long-term, you could have much nastier side effects than this. You could wind up with major health problems like osteoporosis or heart problems. You're depriving your body of the nutrition it needs.

From the way you're talking, it sounds like you could possibly have an eating disorder. Eating over 700 calories shouldn't make you feel like "poo". I urge you to get some help and also raise your calories to 1200 per day at the minimum.

I need some help. I have been heavy most of my younger year. When I was 18, I moved out of my parents house & ate 1 apple a day, and in return, lost 80 pounds & kept it off (with better eating) for 10 years.

Then, I got married, went thru 9 pregnancies & gained about 80 pounds.

I have issues with calories. To me, I can't wrap my head around how more is better. So far, I've lost 48 pounds of the 80 I want to lose, but I'm stuck. One week I lost 6 pounds, the next week I gained 6, then I lost 5, now I gained 2 oz.

I am working out 1 hour a day, 6 days a week, burning some 6000 calories a week & eating 700 calories a day. I eat well (fruits & veggies ) and can't get past that number. I've been eating this way for a year.. and I get mad when I go over 700 calories.

I can't figure why I'm still gaining. Is my body storing fat?

I'm also suffering from headaches & slight dizziness during the day.. but I can't understand how to get in more calories without feeling like poo for doing so.

Help me, please.
