Congrats on getting active with SparkPeople - it's a great community, wonderful resources and fantastic support- it's also lots of fun and easy to make friends because we're all in this together.
Sometimes the best way to start is to just pick a small goal such as drinking 8 glasses of water a day or eating 5 fruits and veggies plus a small exercise goal such as increasing whatever you've been doing by 10%. I like the way a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE is emphasized here instead of a 'quick fix wonder diet' and another nice thing about SparkPeople is that we have permission to be human - we don't have to change everything at once or be in a hurry to reach our goals. Take a few baby steps and then a few more and before you know it, you'll have completed a long journey - I hope you enjoy this community as much as I have - it teaches us how to make positive lifetime changes because that's the only thing that will work over time!

Hi Lynn Just want to say in taking the first step in joining SparkPeople and asking for help. We are all here to give you all the support and motivation you can use. The way I started out was a made a Spark Page. Then I started looking through the Spark Teams and finding ones I had things in common with. You will find lots of Spark friends on the teams that will be very glad to help you. I also started by making small changes, one step at a time. First I started by tracking my food and my activities no matter how much or how little. I changed one thing at a time toward a healthier lifestyle. One of the many things I have learned from joining SP, is not to measure our success by scales alone. NSV, non scale victories, are a much better way to enjoy your success. First of all. Welcome to Sparkpeople! Second of all Breathe. It's going to be okay. Start small - USE the fast break goals that you set; they really do help! change 1 - 3 things at a time, get used to those, then add soemthing else.
LITTLE THINGS DO MATTER! That choice you make to park farther away from the store may SEEM like nothing, but little bits of activity, and small choices can make a HUGE difference.
Secondly, set yourself small goals. To say, loose 5 lbs to start with. Big amounts look scarier and more insurmountable.
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! You can do this!!!

I'm 75lbs overweight! I want to lose weight. I NEED to lose weight. I'm borderline diebetic, my blood pressure is high and my periods are irregular (it could also be because I'm 42, but who knows). I have hypothyroidism, and I'm on anti-depressants (cyprelex, 20 mg)! My doctor refused to sign my "gastric bypass" surgery and I'm desperate! Please can someone send me some advice, some love, some solutions? Lynn
