My fiance' and I have been together for four years, living together for three and engaged for two years. This December of 2013 would be three years of being engaged, but I pulled the trigger and booked a venue for October 20, 2012.
A long engagement was good for us. We moved away from family and friends to Florida where we had NO ONE. We became engaged while in Florida - three months after we moved. It was great for us because our relationship got off to a bit of a rough start. Florida was make or break for us.
Well, Florida made us ... and now we're getting married in October!
We've been able to learn more and more about each other and we know that our marriage will work. We're really happy and eager to start our 'wedded' lives together.
We got engaged christmas eve 2011 and we will be having a long engagement (mostly because of my fiance), but my hopes was to be married september 2013. He is looking at 2014 when we get can all of credit cards, car/truck payments, and his hospital bills from a broken leg last summer all paid off. We are looking at buying a house, saving up money then getting married...we have been together for 4 years this June! Seems like the wedding will never get here so i can marry my best friend! On a good note it gives me a longer time period to look for dresses and lose weight :) Long engagements are a good thing! Enjoy your time as being engaged!

We were engaged Christmas morning of 2010 too! Yeah!
Don't worry. My fiance and I got engaged on Christmas morning 2010 and our wedding isn't until September 2013. He lost his job when we had originally planned the wedding for this September. Life happens. Just go with it and enjoy being together :)

Don't worry about it...I've waited 11 years to marry my love. We got engaged in December 2010 and will be married in May of 2013. Believe me, the longer you are together and able to grow with one another, the stronger you will be. Just remember to always be fair with one another and tell them that you love them, and the time will fly by.
we got engaged this pat November. We have been dating for two years now, and we are planning on getting married Valentines day of 2016 (after I get my bachelors). It seems sooo far away, but I am super excited about it!
My fiancé and I live in France while all of my family is in the United States. We're going to have a small ceremony and dinner here with my fiancé's mother and a few friends.
As for my family (arguably MUCH larger), I don't know how we're going to have a ceremony with them. It requires going back to the States to do all the planning, etc...and I can't see when that could happen! :(

I know, right? We've been together for 6 years in April, and are looking at wedding dates in 2014. I'll be done school (finally) and I totally agree about saving up money! I keep trying to tell myself... school is an investment...

Haha wow, I saw the title of this thread and was all, "Yay! We're not the only ones waiting 8-10 years before our wedding!" ...and then I read the posts, lol. I always thought a 1-year engagement was the standard?
Now, I know 8-10 years sounds like a paaaainfully long time. But we want to wait until I've finished grad school (and I'm still an undergrad), and then we may have to wait another year or two to finish saving up money (because being in school makes me poor!).

We originally wanted to get married in the Summer of 2011, but 2 layoffs prevented that from happening......We've (officially) been engaged for over a year now....and planning the whole shindig. We are getting down to the final stretch with 5 months to go........
We got engaged Feb 14th 2011 & plan to get married May 24, 2013. How's that for a long engagement. 2 years!! We want a big wedding and it's going to cost money so we are saving.

I am all for a long engagement. We got engaged in September 2011, and then picked a date in November - September 2013. Now everyone keeps asking, "Why are you waiting so long?" I didn't realize we had to get married immediately after getting engaged. The reason we are waiting until next year is because a) I don't want to stress myself out doing the planning - we are taking our time and checking out all of the venues in the area that we like before deciding one and then I will work on the rest; and b) because we will be able to pay for everything that way. We aren't having a huge wedding (maybe 50-75 guests), but I still want the day to be beautiful and perfect for us. So taking our time is something we agreed to do.

Here's to long engagements! Just got engaged a week before Christmas, and have no desire to set the date as of yet - My ex is still suing me for more money and I have no desire to sign on the dotted line in a hurry - but my new man is such a sweetheart I feel so lucky - -we are in a committed relationship nonetheless and I couldn't be happier! When we do get married, I have a feeling it will be a spur of the moment cuz we just don't want to wait any longer. Plan for a very informal one - but would like a candelight evening service at church.

We are still "pre-engaged" (which is the awkward time period between moving in together, ordering the ring, waiting for it to arrive, and him actually asking formally). However, we are mostly settled on getting married sometimes in early Spring of 2013. I want to have my second year of school out of the way and, hopefully, be down to my ideal weight by then.

OK, we're planning a wedding for June 2014. Don't have the same sense of urgency for the 2nd time around, PLUS financial considerations are much more beneficial to me if I reach the age of 55 first!
Here's to long engagements. They make you get to know a person that much more. We met on Match.com 2 and 1/2 years ago, and he is such a sweetie.
Hold out for a good one ! Although I'll never regret marrying my first husband (have 2 great kids), it is so nice to be paired with someone who is much more like me.

My fiance and I are going to get married December this year. We both agreed that him finishing school was the priority, and this way it gives me plenty of time to settle into my new job and plan. I can't imagine trying to do it all in a few weeks!

That's not long!!!!! My sister has been engaged for 3 years....still not getting married....
My date is july 6, 2013 because of work scheduling and the fact that date would have been my fiance's grandfather's birthday....I don't think a year and a half is long...so a year and a bit is NOT long...

We've been engaged for 3 years now, with no official date yet. Life has gotten in the way a couple of times already which is making planning less desirable now. I want big wedding feel but don't want to plan (or pay ha!) for it. Hoping to finally seal the deal late summer or early fall of 2012.

We've been engaged for over a year now and we're hoping to be married as soon as we can...maybe in the middle of 2012 or early 2013. We're on a LDR (booo) so it's hard but nonetheless, we're both very excited to spend the rest of our lives together. I'm hoping to be half the size I currently am by then. heheh
We're still trying to pick a date. We originally talked about getting married back in July, but he did the whole "official proposal" just a couple weeks ago, as some paperwork had finally been settled. Now, we'd love to get married immediately, but it may be November of next year before we can get a date that works for everyone.

A year doesn't seem like too long, when you start planning and doing everything, you will probably wish you had more time :-) I've been engaged for two years now, and have been putting some money away, but also I work full time, care for my Mom, and go to school, so life is keeping me plenty busy. My fiance has been great and so understanding, but it is time for me to get planning!!
We're kind of in the same boat. We've been engaged for three years. We keep planning on getting married but life keeps getting in the way. We don't have a whole lot of money and even though it's going to a very small wedding (me, fiance, his two kids, maybe his mom) we would like a couple of the things a big wedding has. I would really like to include my two step kids in the wedding since I'm joining the family and they were so upset when they found out their mom snuck off and got married. I have some financial issues to take care of as well but the biggest thing I want to loose 60 pounds before we married. It's kind of hard with no set date yet but I'm hoping to be from 178 to 120 by April 2012.

Aww thank you! I figured it was, we've been engaged for about 4 months now the time spand does seem to help a whole bunch and like you said not so stressful. Congrats!

Just over a year from now sounds like the perfect amount of time! My fiance and I got engaged a year before we're getting married and it was just the right amount of time to be able to get things done & get things we wanted without being stressed out. Good Luck!! :)

Hey, my fiance and I are getting married around October of 2012. the rather long engagement is for a few reasons, one, us being young still, two to save money and have plenty of time to plan everything, and three I want to be half my size. We are having a really different wedding. red and black for the colors with a tad "goth" theme. I can't wait!
