It's most likely that it is only for a target heart rate to try to keep you in, and that the levels do not affect the reported calorie burn.
If you're doing something you consider very vigorous, it would try to keep your HR up more, beeping at you to keep it up more than if you're doing something relatively light where it expects you'll probably maintain a lower HR. In that respect, you'd probably burn less on a level 1 thing than a level 3, but purely because level 3 stuff actually is harder to do!
Try doing exactly the same workout (a 10 minute walk would be adequate for testing) on both level 1 setting, and level 3 setting. Chances are it'll report a very similar if not exactly the same burn, but be more naggy at you to keep it up on level 3.

Its a new balance n4- I really love it. The instructions say that depending on the activity level it will automatically set the target min and max heart rate and I kind of assumed that would somehow throw off the calorie count. Does that make sense at all? Ha ha
I've never heard of an HRM having 'level' settings. What brand and model is it? Maybe someone with the same one can help.
Your heart rate is an indicator of how hard you are working out. Try it on level 2/3 - does it actually give a different reading? That is very strange!

I'm not familiar with your model of HRM, but I wouldn't think that the activity level should affect your calories burned reading- at least I'd hope it wouldn't. Whether or not it's high intensity would probably depend on you and how challenging the workout is for you. If you're really pushing yourself to the limit, then I'd use the higher setting.

Hi all! I've been using my new balance n4 hrm for several months now and really love it. However, I do have a question about the activity level. I do Zumba almost daily and like to track my calories burned with my hrm, Would you guys consider that level 3 as in high intensity or level 2 as in moderate? I've had it set on level 1 this whole time cause I was confused- would that make a difference in my calorie burn? If so a positive or negative calorie difference? Thanks!
