FYI.....most restaurants thin their dressings down by adding milk, oil, or water to them to make them go farther and save money, that iswhy they are THIN

If any of you are allergic to, or don't want to use something with MSG in it, don't use the Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing mix. Making your own mix w/o MSG won't quite taste the same as MSG is a flavor enhancer.

try one of these.
1/2 Cup Light Salad dressing (miracle whip) 4 Tbs milk 2-3 packets sweetner (or use sugar) vinegar chives garlic
I also have a magic sandwich biz dressing. 1 Tbs Salad dressing (miracle whip) 1 tsp mustard 2 Tbs Ranch Dressing Great for Sandwiches.
In a bowl, combine oil, vinegar, sweetener and marjoram. Whisk in buttermilk, yogurt and mayonnaise. Stir in onion, parsley and garlic. Cover and refrigerate for six hours or overnight to thicken. Whisk before serving. Serve over salad greens and vegetables of your choice. Refrigerate leftover dressing. Yield: 1-1/4 cups

Per serving: 30 calories, 44 mg sodium, 1 mg cholesterol, 2 g carbohydrates, 1 g protein, 2 g fat

This goes against every classic formula for salad dressing, but to get a "ranch dressing" taste WITHOUT chemicals, I use a heaping tablespoon of mayo, a big crushed garlic clove, a pinch of dried oregano (fresh gets slimy), five or six grinds of cracked pepper, a dash of salt, & thin with nonfat milk to your preferred consistency. Mix it in a glass jar, let it stand for at least a half hour & taste for seasoning. I don't really measure, those are just estimates. (Sometimes I add a tiny bit of lemon juice with the mayo, but be careful so as not to curdle the whole thing. Sometimes I cut the amount of oregano by half and add a little dried dill with it.) Keeps in the fridge a few days.
Go easy on it; this is not a non-fat recipe, and if you make it thick, it's going to have tons of fat & calories, though still not as much as original ranch.
You can use plain Greek yogurt for up to half the mayo, but it's not the same flavor. More than half, and you lose that "ranch" thing altogether.
