I live about 2 hours east of Pittsburgh... near the State College area (Penn State) and every restaurant, aside from chains, has fries on their steak and chicken salads! Even the fancy Bedford Springs Resort serves them that way :)
Thanks for your responses.

I was raised in western PA. I only saw fries on salads a few times, at local restaurants (as opposed to nat'l chains).
I live in Michigan, I travel a lot, the only place I'd ever seen fries on a salad advertised was at Primanti's. Possibly other locations in/around Pittsburgh too? But the only thing that pops to mind is Primanti's which in itself is very unique (delicious, and unhealthy as well lol).

" I'm surprised the OP hasn't noticed that ads for salads at Wendy's or Applebees or similar chains never show fries. (Unless they modify the ads for that market!)" No, they do not.

I've never heard of french fries ON a salad, and I've lived in California, Chicago, and now Colorado (I guess I like "C" places). Sounds like it's definitely a regional thing :)

I had never heard of that ever. We don't serve salads with fries on them in the Midwest. I'm pretty sure that cancels out the whole point of ordering a salad :)
I've traveled throughout the US - the ONLY place where fries are included on your salad is the Pittsburgh area. I'm surprised the OP hasn't noticed that ads for salads at Wendy's or Applebees or similar chains never show fries. (Unless they modify the ads for that market!)

I've never been to a restaurant where a salad comes with french fries on it or included as a side.
I lived outside and in Pittsburgh until 6 years ago. This is definitely a Pittsburgh/PA thing. That's why you will go to some places not in the region and see a Pittsburgh Steak Salad - includes the fries.
I haven't been to many restaurants in the area that DIDN'T have fries on the chicken or steak salad.
Annnnnd now I want a salad with fries - lol

I am also from PA. Outside Pittsburgh to be exact.
NOT all salads come with fries on them. In fact, very very few do - at least at the places I eat!
Only the salads from Primanti's do... and places that advertise "Pittsburgh" salads.
I've lived all along the west coast (Arizona , CA, WA). No one puts fries on a salad over here. But it does sound yummy!

I am going to preface this with I know this is not healthy, but I am interested to know what people from other areas of the county and world have experienced.
A friend of mine from out of town is visiting. He is from Indiana and I live in Pennsylvania. We went to a Sports Bar for dinner, and I ordered a Steak Salad and told the server no french fries.
He looked at me and asked "why did you order a salad with no fries? You guys put french fries on salad?"
I thought every one did that??
My question is... how many people out there from different geographic regions (outside of Pennsylvania) do this? In PA( at least where I am from) it goes without saying when you order a chicken salad or steak salad there will be french fries on it! You have to ask for no fries if you don't want them.
