Thanks to all of you. I appreciate your comments and support. I did go set up my page and now I am figuring out what all I want to do, but I did determine a new goal today - to eat within my calorie range because I typically do under that. I even blogged about it, so I suppose I am getting into the groove. Looking forward to reading about others here.

Hi ~ Welcome to SparkPeople. I find that interacting with other Sparks is really the best way to stay motivated and on-track. Taking advantage of the educational aspects of SP is also key to weight loss goal success. Come back to the message boards and read blogs to find people that you feel like you would like to "friend" These folks will help you attain your goals.

Congrats on taking the first step into changing your life to a more healthier one by joining the site. Spark is filled with amazing people that will motivate, support and encourage you on your journey. There is so much to learn and discover here, take this one day at a time.

A couple of things I would like to suggestion to make you Spark experience a great one.

1. Put together your own Spark page. This is a great way to communicate with other members and build relationships that will support and motivate you. You can do this by going to the START page and the green section has something about your Sparkpage.

2. Make goals for yourself. Each month I make a list of what I want to accomplish that month and break them down to smaller goals to work with week by week. This way the BIG picture doesn't seem so big.

3. Join Spark teams. There are tons of teams here and you will be able to find ones that fit to what you like or want in a team.

The key to success here is to be active and you've already started by joining. You will find that everyone is willing to help you out if you need it. Spark friends are here for support, motivation and encouragement. Good luck on your journey to a healthier lifestyle! Again, welcome to the SP family!

Since I am here and looking around. I thought I would say hello just to see what that looks like. emoticon

I joined - hmmm - maybe a week ago now? Sounds right. I heard about this site from a co-worker who heard from I don't know where. It looked interesting and since I am in this healthy mode I figured, "what the hey!" To be honest, I wasn't looking for a community to join in my weight loss efforts. Sounds standoffish, I am sure, but the reason isn't because of that. It's because I am generally the type of person who doesn't like to be told what to do and when I am not in the mood to be rah rah'd, I don't want that either. emoticon But I liked the idea of just seeing how what I am already doing translates in this Spark world. So I joined saying that I want to lose 61 pounds. I already lost 21 before I got here, but I have been doing it super super SUPER slowly - since Sept, 2010, a few months before I turned 40. That is because:

1 - I found out that year that I have gallstones, which was my cue to get my act back together so they can either dissipate on their own or I can go ahead and let them remove them, but laparoscopically is preferred. The more weight I lose the better if I am going to do that at some point.
2 - I have lost 20 pounds on my own once before years ago before I had kids, so I knew I could do it, but I also know the first 20 is the easiest (to me)
3 - I had done LA Weight Loss twice after having kids, stopped the first time after child 1, picked it back up again, got to 5 pounds before my goal then got pregnant with child 2. At that point I just let life get me busy.

This all taught me that the ideal thing for me to do is to lose the weight slowly. After all, I gained it that way and now that I am done having kids and I am over 40, this time I need to get back there and I should be able to stay.

I was always afraid of getting on that yo-yo ride and stayed away from any kind of professional weight loss help for years before I did LA because of that very fear. But I was glad I did it when I finally did. #2 and #3 from my list above taught me that (here's another list for ya):

1 - drinking water is KEY for me if I want to lose weight
2 - my goal weight is actually more than I anticipated because I am not interested in being skinny, just feeling good and able to do what I need to. Those standards they have about what I should weigh for my height? Bull.
3 - I can lose weight without exercise, so when I DO exercise too, I feel powerful!

So there you go. What I am doing, why and how. Slow and steady is my mantra. I won't give up anything I love. I prefer moderation instead. I want to make exercise as much of a habit as I can so that's my focus, but I am not ready to do anything beyond my beloved treadmill and WiiFit. I do my best to drink my 8 waters every day but I refuse to beat myself up if I only hit 6 or 7 because you know what? It can take all day for me to drink that (thank God I love water, but I am generally not a voracious drinker). Sometimes I want Arizona Lemon Ice Tea, darn it! I try not to eat after 9 p.m. despite the fact that sometimes I don't leave work until after 7 or get home from some kid activity until 8:30. I take this one day at a time and try to make the best food choices I can at any given moment. I think carb control more than calorie control. My whole way of doing things is open to small changes, for sure. But like the rest of my life, whatever it is has to fit in with my life or my desire to have it in my life or it's a no-go.

Whew. I sound like I have a brick wall up huh? emoticon Naw. I'm a pretty open person, actually, and I'm good at encouraging and supporting others. I'm just sharing my state of mind.

And now I have to continue trying to figure this place out. I think there must be a profile page somewhere that I need to fill in. Haven't found it yet, but there are so many little corners around here to turn that I am bound to run into it sooner or later. I look forward to lurking and being silently inspired by the rest of you.
