It's a life style change when you can eat one cookie instead of one dozen. One once in a great while won't hurt you any. When food becomes your friend not your enemy that is when you know it's a life style change. Good luck.......you can do this...........!

Take it slow and count all the victories. Build on your strengths. Life IS an ongoing diet, because you have to eat to live, right?
If you gained on a diet, I'm guessing that you gained after you stopped the weight-loss diet (it was a weight-loss diet, right?) The easiest diets for that to happen are ones that tell you not to watch what you eat. Just stay away from BAD foods and only eat GOOD foods. Sometimes, that can work if your food habits were abysmal to begin with and you make a radical turnaround, affecting your daily calorie intake. But the whole GOOD FOOD/ BAD FOOD diet approach takes some real effort to watch calories, too.
I have bad news for you - you're still on a diet. You didn't make a lifestyle change.
How do I know?
A cookie now and then is acceptable in a lifestyle. If you were SO desperate for a cookie and SO miserable about denying yourself one, you're still "on a diet" and thinking of some foods as "not-allowed foods".
In a lifestyle it's OKAY to have a cookie - now and then. Don't have one every day. But if you're really really jonesing for one, then go ahead. Have one. This is one the reasons Spark gives you a RANGE to eat in. :)
So keep trying to work on those mental attitudes. It's great that you WANT to do the lifestyle approach now. But remember baby steps - just make small changes that you can stick to. Small changes will add up over time.
And if you really want to that badly ... have the cookie. :)

I started last Sept with a diet that ended with me gaining 17 pounds. I can't look in the mirror and I am so afraid if I don't do something about my eating habits within the next year I will gain more. Last week I approached things a little differently - a lifestyle change. I am not eating junk food anymore and I am not going on a diet ever again. I must admit yesterday I almost cried because I really wanted a cookie, how sad! In any event, I am going to continue to move forward. Lost a few pounds with simple changes. I am really hoping that eating right and less eventually take the pounds off?
