I don't know if points plus and calories can compare directly. Someone told me they thought a point plus is 40 calories. Generally, this is true, but the points get 'tweaked' to kind of direct the person to more fiber and more protein, less fat, etc.
Today, I ate tuna salad on some big crispy wafers I bought at Whole Foods. The tuna salad had lots of points (fat) and the wafers (they pop them in a big popcorn popper type of machine right there in the store) had NO points. Go figure.

When I did Weight Watchers Points Plus I also counted calories. I found the following...
When I added my "points" up for the day it came out to about 1000-1200 calories.
When I added in my "free" fruits and veggies it bumped it up to 1300-1500 depending on my selections.
I do not like this Points Plus (or any WW points program) - I liked the old school program. I lost the most on the original Weight Watchers program.

You will have to find a plan that works for you. Dieting, eating "right", losing weight are all mental as well as phsyical.
I know for me, I have a hard time with the idea of being "limited". It's just a game, of course, but I binge when I say "oh, i have to eat so little". So i do the "free vegie" trick from WW, (or rather, my doctor, in my case, is the one who suggested it) so that i don't feel limited.
It could also be that you were cheating you WW points. I'm not saying you were, or intentionally, just that the "points' are far less precise.
There are several groups here that are specific to weight waters and ex-weight watchers, if that was something that worked for you, you might check in with them.

When I did Weight Watchers I very rarely went over my points...fruits and veggies we're free so I could eat as many as I wanted, but with SP calories seem to add up pretty quickly.
