How about Spark People giving 2 levels of membership like other sites? See Livestrong.com for instance. You can have it free and see pop ups and ads or you can pay a small monthly fee and keep from having all these ads in your face all the time.

Can advertisers tell how many people see their ads, or do you have to actually click on it for it to count as a hit? I never click on them either, because I can't afford to buy anything anyway - and I would like the pages to open faster. I never knew how their "views" were counted. Is AdBlock Plus free? When you download it, is it one of those add-ons that the computer is always asking you to disable to speed up your computer. Mine is terribly, terribly slow - but it was a very cheap computer anyway. I have no clue how to make it work better.

You logic is flawed.

People who block the ads are not messing with success, as you put it.

I will never click an ad on any site I visit. I KNOW that.
So there is no downside to blocking the ads.

By blocking them, my screen is much less cluttered.
By blocking them, I am not distracted by them.
By blocking them, the site loads MUCH faster (so I am never complaining about how slow the site is, as many do!).

i DON;T KNOW MUCH ABOUT BLOCKING ADS - i want SparkPeople's advertisers to get all the views and hits they can get, so they keep paying SparkPeople to advertise here. That's how the site stays free. Please, let's not mess with success for something that is SO valuable to so many of us.

It is annoying. I've blocked most of them, though. I wouldn't want this to be a paid site either. I wouldn't be able to keep coming here.

As annoying as they are, especially when they pop up right over something you're reading or entering, I am VERY grateful for them - because they keep the site FREE! If I had to pay ANYTHING AT ALL for it, I could not afford it. I would feel horrible about two levels of service - where rich people could afford to pay for no ads and those of us who are desperately trying to survive would get all the ads.

Of course, then the advertisers wouldn't bother placing the ads here, because no one who could afford their product would see the ads.

Every time someone even SUGGESTS making this a paid site, I get really scared. It has become my lifeline.

Before you suggest changing what SparkGuy put together so thoughtfully - so everyone who truly NEEDS this site can access it, please think of other people who are not blessed with the wealth that would let you BUY convenience. Every now and then, the suggestion to make this a paid site comes up...OMG - that scares me! There are millions of members around the world - some of us struggle every day to eat and literally go without some meals to pay for an internet connection, because this site is that important to us.

There are many ways....
I use Firefox + AdBlock Plus.
No ads on any site.

You don't have to pay anything... just block the ads.

I can't help but noticing all of the popups today. I would vote to pay a fee to use this site rather than having to constantly click out of these annoying popups! I love this site - it motivates me and keeps me honest with myself at the same time. It is the best thing ever! Who is with me?
