It only changes when you save the goals page. It doesn't recalculate "if you change something", it recalculates purely if you hit the save button. So you may have left your goals as-is and hit save and then when it changed you didn't realise you did it because you thought "I didn't change anything".
As already posted though, if it's too high and you want a lower range, then just change your goal date until your range is in line.
Sue - if you are changing and saving your fitness goals page (calories burned) or your weight goal page, then your nutrition goals may change since that is what your nutrition goals are based on. If you don't make any changes to either of those goal pages, your nutrition goals will remain at the goals you set for it.
Okay I've tried to follow your discussion but what has been happening to me doesn't seem to fit.
My tracker was at 1490-1840 calories. Then I hit the end of week 3 in training for virtual 5k. That night, my tracker changed to 1600-2000 calories. I changed no goals.
I switched my calorie range back to 1490 - 1840, mainly because I was having difficulty eating all of the food, though I did add in another snack.
Now I have a problem with my foot and am under podiatrist care. I am not to walk for at least 3 weeks. I was willing to drop out of the program, but received a reply from the team board to leave it where I was and jump back in when medically cleared.
I put my range down to 1200 - 1600 and it keeps flipping back up. There is no way I want to lose the ground I've gained while I can do no exercising.
Thank you for the explanation. I thought I was going crazy having to reset my goals nearly every day. My goal calorie intake is higher than SP's recommendation because it is based on my doctor's recommendation to lose only one pound per week. His recommendation is based on my basic metabolic rate and taking in to account my lean body mass and activity level

Thanks for all the information, guys. I think the tracker calculates the max number of calories you can consume to still make you weight goal on time (assuming that goal results in two pounds or less of weight loss each week.) It was definitely confusing to me the first time I saw my calorie range INCREASE instead of decrease.
Well, whatever date works. If it doesn't bring it down low enough, make it another couple of weeks closer and try again.
No, tracking exercise won't do it. You can track thousands of calories more than your goal and it won't change your food ranges. It's only based on the goals, not the actual trackings.

Great ! So you mean to say I should make my goal date sooner than a year to be able to keep the low range? I also suspect that when I put in extra exercise, they think I am using up too many calories and then it changes. Thanks again !
S4WINDS your dietary choice is not supported here, as it's a scam and incredibly unhealthy.
The reason the system doesn't allow you to set the goals and make them stay, is that it assumes that most of us do not know what is healthy ourselves. The site uses reliable nutritional science data to calculate the best range, and that value may change as someone loses weight, does more exercise, or otherwise changes their lifestyle. Therefore it's best if the system automatically recalculates any time we do anything that affects our needs that way.
Those who have specific different needs for very good reasons just need to work with it -
Pick one: a) Keep manually setting the goals again yourself whenever they change b) Don't use Spark's goals - just keep your own goals on a post-it beside your screen. c) Set up the weight and fitness goals pages and then never change them.
CRS949 if you only have 9 more kg to lose (accoridng to your ticker) then the minimum range is not suitable for you.
To keep Spark on the miminum you'd have to bring your goal date forward. Setting the most rapid weight loss the system allows keeps you on the minimum.
But I would advise against it. Weight loss naturally wants to slow down the less there is to lose. You should be aiming for no more than a pound a week, and within 5-10 pounds loss that will probably slow down to half a pound a week. The last 10-15 pounds can take more than six months to get off! So with so little left to lose, generating a smaller daily deficit to lose no more than a pound, you should probably be on a slightly higher range than 1200-1550 anyway.

Hint Hint perhaps? It is probably setting based on whats healthy for your weight. Be careful when setting your own goals. WEBMD had an article that recommended your calories should be 7Xyour weight. So if your 200 lbs 1400 calories to lose weight, but no less than 1200. Plus you should have a higher calorie rate if your exercising as well. I find for me spark people sets it pretty close to that recommendation.

I am under a physician's care on the HCG diet and doing great. I alternate between "phases" of this diet where I will either be eating 500 calories/ day or 1500 calories/day. I have been in IT all my life and was commenting that this program could be made more "user friendly" and less "big brother" by giving users such as myself the option to stop having this program automatically change the goals we setup.

Dragonchilde .....Please explain more. The recommended range minimum is 1200-1550 which is what I put. What do I do to keep it from reverting? Thanx for your input.

S4winds: Things changed because the program is set up based on healthy science and research to provide safe, sustainable weight loss through diet and exercise. When you update your goals, it will automatically recalculate based on the information you've provided.
You can update your goals and keep them there, if you enter those last, but any time you change a goal, it will revert. Unless you're on a medically-supervised diet, professionally educated in dietary needs (a registered dietician) or are an extreme outlier (someone on the high end of the weight loss with 200+ lbs to lose can end up with a much too high calorie range) then it's best to stick with the recommended ranges.

CRS949 - every time you change your goals (fitness or weight loss) whether or not you change something, it will automatically update its calorie range calculations. Based on the fitness goals you've input and your weight goals, 1480-1800 is appropriate for your needs, most likely. Why do you want to put the goal at the minimum range? I have had my goals changed on my also and do not like it. Why can't Spark programmer make it so that you have the option to keep Spark from resetting things? It feels like Spark is trying to be "big brother". Allow people to keep their goals where they want them.

I set my goal at 1200-1550 calories and it will also change by itself to 1480-1800. I have to keep going in to reset. Why? It messes with my daily feedback reports.
Just as the others mentioned, going below 1200 is not advised for anyone unless you are under doctor supervision. With that said, your edited nutrition goals will remain in your account as long as you don't make changes to your weight goal page or your fitness goal page. Making any changes to either of those pages will reset your Nutrition Tracker settings.

The minimum range that Sparkpeople will allow anyone to have is 1200-1550. That's a RANGE in which you should be able to eat, allowing for 30 minutes 3 x per week, and still lose.
Under no circumstances should you ever eat below 1200 calories a day, unless you are under close supervision by a qualified medical professional. doing so can slow your metabolism and put you at a nutritional shortage. It's very difficult to meet the minimum nutritional requirements of your body if you eat less than that. This is especially true at your weight; you should still be able to lose a safe amount of weight while eating more. 1200 calories is usually appropriate for only sedentary, slight women.

I am no expert, but I know I have been told by doctors, dietians, and nutrionist never to go below 1200 calories. I am a diabetic and have considerable other health issues and the SP site put me on the 1230-1580 or so calories and I have been losing weight... 5 pounds in 2 weeks. I am exercising daily as well. I am guessing and strictly guessing that the is reason SP will not allow that low of calorie intake. Just a guess and my 2 cents worth. *LOL*

Help I am confused. First I set my goals at 1000-1200 a day calories. I noticed lately I have had to go back and change it back because it wants to give me more calories up to 1500 calories a day. I don't want to over eat I have been losing and want to continue. Why can't the tracker stay at what your set it.
