- Are you eating enough?
- Are you well hydrated when exercising?
- Are you pushing yourself too hard, e.g. trying to walk too fast may be?
- Are you taking your rest days?

I had trouble with getting winded all the time until I really started to concentrate on my breathing. It turns out I was holding my breath sometimes, breathing quickly and shallowly most of the time, and then gasping for air soon after I started. Now I pace my breathing so that I am taking steady deep breaths, and the difference has been amazing. Instead of having to slow down to catch my breath, I can go much further and only need to slow down when my muscles get sore.

For comparison, most of my exercising is running at about 5-6mph, and some weekends I go backpacking, so I am hiking up and down mountains with a 40lb pack.

It took some experimenting for me to find the right breathing pace for me, but once I found it I noticed a big improvement.

In fairness, you probably have made some progress and just can't see it yet. Every day you do this you are going to work hard so you may be actually working harder than you did the first day because you are more fit. Give yourself some time and remember, you are doing it to get winded and burn no matter how fit you get in the end. In our dojo we say that we work to failure. We keep pushing until we just can't do it anymore and then we know we stretched ourselves.:-)

Hi,

While working out 6 days a week is an awesome goal, remember that the body makes the adaptation to your workouts when you are resting, when you are not working out. You may want to add in a day of two of rest for a couple of weeks and see how you feel.

But in all fairness, as a 6 1/2 year runner, I still struggle with the first mile. I run 5-6 days a week and you would think by now it would be a piece of cake, but I have to tell myself just give it 8-9 minutes and I will get my groove. If I don't, than I have no issues calling it a day and going back home. This may be my body's way of telling me it needs rest.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue-

I work out Monday through Saturday riding for 25 minutes and then hiking for 30 minutes for a total of 6.5 miles worth of distance. I have been doing this for about 2 months now. However, every morning that I do this routine, it feels like the first day I have ever done it. My legs ache, I feel fatigued and then when I get to the hike on the mountain, my body burns, I'm breathless going up the hills, etc. I have noticed that it doesn't take me as long to catch my breath but to feel so winded and defeated with my progress although I have been doing this for 2 months is really putting a ding in my motivation and self-confidence. When I don't focus on how poorly I feel, I am glad to be exercising but today it just completely overwhelmed me. I was crying for the last 15 minutes of my hike which was mostly uphill.
Any advise, suggestions, words of wisdom would be awesome!
