The same thing happened to my son during football training. It only happened when he ran. I took him to a specialist and found out he was dehydrated. The important thing is not only to hydrate yourself during your workout...you have to stay hydrated ALL day before your workout.

Eating right after workout is not really a good idea
Wait a half an hour or better
and eating light foods is best
maybe you are working to hard exercise need not hurt
one day at a time

Jessica,

I can absolutely feel your pain. I am training for a half marathon and it seems the farther I run, the worse my stomach reacts. It is not fun when you feel horrible just from running. I hope you feel better

Good luck at the doctor's! Hopefully it's nothing serious. It's good that you're listening to your body and getting it checked out sooner rather than later. Sending good thoughts your way!

I know that when I feel too nauseous for food, Gatorade becomes by best friend. That's usually the only way I can come even remotely close to getting my minimum calories if I'm too sick to eat.

Here's hoping to good news from the doctor.

Hi Patty

thanks for the reply. I have been consulting a nuritonist and on my appointment on friday she did advise me to get back to the doctor. I have decided to take some time off til then from running, I didn't run yesterday but I did a spin workout and found myself really sick to my stomach, even though I was hydrated, rested, and had enough to eat about 1 hour prior to my workout. I am praying its not the cancer again, I don't think I could handle another round and surely my two year old daughter can't. She has been through enough in the last year.

Something inside me tells me something isn't right, I thought maybe I was getting sick a couple of weeks ago but nothing came of it, then I thought I was not hydrating enough but that isn't it either..... I will just have to wait and see and hope for the best. Until then I don't want to alarm my family at all, so I am keeping it to myself. Which is causing a lot of anxiety

Did you eat too close to the time you exercised? Did you drink enough water to stay hydrated? How is your blood sugar level? How about you A1C results? What you're feeling is definitely not normal. I would not pass go if I were you - make an appointment to see your doctor. Explain to him/her how you feel and don't take a brush off for an answer. Maybe a visit to a certified nutritionist would be in order. I hope you follow up on this and don't use a "stomach ache" as a reason to quit exercising. Get checked out and keep on going.

Don't be afraid to take a bit longer than THAT,. from the running.

As far as hubby goes, I guess time will tell. We have been told that it is very common to still need surgery after an initial one. He had 3 strictures which were causing blockages, but I don't know whether they removed just the worst, or all of them, because a couple times he went into hospital with blockages the blockages involved all three of the strictures.

Hi Kris...

you are right our minds can play tricks on us. Even though i feel like i am fine from the surgery i never really thought about until this evening that my body is still healing itself. I plan on taking the rest of the week off from running and will start again on monday with less longer runs . I have been just so eager to get back into racing.

My twin brother has Chron's...that is a hard illness to deal with. I hope you husband feels better real soon.

Sometimes our brains play tricks on us and common sense really must take the driving seat! As an example, 3 weeks ago my hubby had a bowel resection for Crohn's Disease. this is where they cut a portion of the bowel out and join the ends back up. It is major surgery! He was told in no uncertain terms by the surgeon who on the morning of discharge and who saw hubby going to lift up a light week-end bag off the floor to the bed, to LEAVE it and the nurses would do it for him, that he was NOT to lift ANYthing for 6 weeks! Well, hubby came home, and within THREE DAYS he was out in the garage banging around on various things, then complaining that he was in pain, but in NO WAY would he accept that it was because of what he was doing! He had to go back to his GP on Tuesday - the GP told him that there was an lot of healing still to be done in there and he would be inclined to do nothing for EIGHT weeks from the date of surgery! Hubby STILL goes out banging, lifting, pushing etc.!! It comes down to learning to have patience - there is after all a reason for the expression "Patience is a virtue" (and with that, I have to say I am one of the most virtuous people I know - LOL!)

I was thinking that maybe I was...but surgery wise I feel great. No pain at all. However I am going to try to cut back on my mileage again this week. See if that helps. If I am still having trouble with decrease of training and mileage. it will be back to the doctors

O.K. - your surgery COULD put a totally different spin on it. It is possible that you are just plain pushing your body too far, too soon! Perhaps taking it a little more gently for a wee while - like walking not running!

Hi everyone ...thank you so much for the insight.


Last night it was about 80 out not fairly humid. I am thinking that might have something to do with it, and the fact that I was pushing my daughter in her stroller. I had some toast with peanut butter about 40 minutes prior to my run. That is my go too pre run meal.

Fushia6 ..... I wish it could be another little family member on the way...oh how I wish this. But I just had my 4th surgery 9 weeks ago to remove ovarian cancer....no ovaries anymore :-( Though I am currently cancer free.... yay!!! Maybe one day with our frozen embryo's we have stored .....keeping my fingers crossed.

I am going to bring this up with my oncologist to see if he has anything to do with my meds I am on, or god forbid its the cancer or something. Because even now as I sit here i am a little nauseous and haven't done anything at all today. Getting back to where I was before the cancer struck I guess is going to take a little more time and paitence then I expected. I think my body has changed from this experience that it needs more recovery than it used ....

....and when you are at it, is there any chance that there is a new family member on the way? That would cause a lot of nausea for me.
7 miles in an hour - holy moly that is fast. Good for you.

Hi, Jessica. I'm glad you're feeling a bit better this morning. How hot was it outside when you were running ? Feeling nauseous can be a sign of dehydration. Even if you think you're drinking enough water, it might not be enough on really hot, humid days.

Did you have anything to eat prior to your run ? You could consider having a little something to ensure your blood sugar doesn't plummet. Nausea is also a sign of low blood sugar as well as low blood pressure.

If you do start feeling nauseous when exercising, maybe you should consider slowing down your pace. A person shouldn't be in physical distress when exercising. Exercise should invigorate our bodies, not make them sick to their stomach. So, if you feel some distress when you're running, it's okay to slow down. You're not a machine who can do the same workout day after day. Our workouts can vary from day to day for many different reasons.

Listen to your body. If you continue to have these feelings, definitely talk to your doctor because something else might be going on physically.

I suffered repeated nausea & dizziness this summer and found it was from dehydration. Resolved it with appropriate use of Endurolyte caps and/or Fizz electrolyte tabs, both by Hammer Nutrition. www.hammernutrition.com

Glad you're feeling better, I believe you don't need to panic if things sometimes don't work out the way they should. Everyone has on- and off-days and these are sometimes caused by factors other than the ones you can influence, and maybe last night your stomach simply disagreed with some circumstance (humidity? temperature? some bug?). It doesn't hurt to take it easy when you feel queasy, but when you often feel like that I'd rethink the nutrition and hydration patterns like so clearly displayed in the article linked. Hi Everyone


Feeling like my old self this morning...Last night was a bust, I went under the calorie range because I just couldn't get anything down. If It happens again I am going to speak to my dietian about it . See what she thinks and wether its food related or just pushing myself to hard.

When I've over worked on my workout and feel like that, I try something liquid to get down. A glass of milk is one of my go-tos when I get home. It's quick, cold, refreshing, filling.

When this happens I usually just wait it out and eat when I feel better. It happens to me when I haven't been exercising in a while. Sometimes it can happen out of the blue for no apparent reason. Usually it will pass within an hour or so of getting home and then I can eat something light. It's a horrible feeling; like you are going to vomit or pass out. I hope you are feeling better now.

Hi slimmerkiwi

Before my run about 40 minutes prior I had my usual toat with PB . The only thing that was different today in nurition for me was that for my lunch I had some hummas and veggies as part of my meal. I dont normally eat hummas even though i love it. Also I had a bit more food in me at the time of my run because I went out later than usual. Due to the fact that my daughter was coming with me and we had been at a water park in the am. Maybe because I had already had lunch and a late afternoon snack..maybe that was enough of a change my stomach wasn't used too.....

WHAT and HOW MUCH have you eaten in your day prior to your run. The run was later in the day, if you haven't eaten much during the entire day , then you won't have the nutrition in you to help you through such an energetic feat, and this could contribute to the nausea? (speak from many years ago experience!!) It MAY be helpful to use watered down juice instead of water to help you with such an energetic exercise. That way you are getting some energy in during the run.

Never thought to bring this up with my doctor but I am going to do that next week, when I go a follow appointment. I am having a hard time keeping things down tonight. The toast didnt set right.

I did a pretty slow warm up that last about 5 minutes before my offical run this evening, I thought I was hydrated enough but maybe not as much as I should have. Hopefully this will pass by the morning ...just strange how it sometimes effects me and sometimes it doesnt...

Hi Jessica,

I'm not a nutritionist or a doctor. However, I do feel your pain--not sure where you live, but I'm in metro Atlanta where it's sometimes muggy even while working out indoors! So the weather can probably be having an impact. But I'm with Coach Nancy. I would start with the toast like you suggested, but also a piece of fruit for some natural sugar. I know when I feel that way, it's usually dehydration that's the root cause-at least in my case. Maybe some low calorie gatorade would also help-it would replace some of the lost sodium and also have a bit of sugar-just enough to help you feel better without being so sugary that it makes it worse.

Also, did you warm up properly? Sometimes with this crazy weather, we need more time to adjust to working out in the heat and humidity.

But, I would start with the toast and fruit to get something into your system. And like Nancy said, if this continues, then definitely go to a doctor. Good luck!

Hi Jessica,

If you haven't eaten anything within 3 hours of your run, you may want to have a small piece of fruit about an hour or so before you go out so that your blood sugar is better stabilized during your run. Also make sure that you are hydrating during your run. As for what to do afterward, having a little protein with some carbs may help, however, if this issue continues, you may want to talk with your doctor about this.

Hi all,


I had a awesome run today. I ran 7 miles with my daughter in her stroller. It took just over an hour. I noticed I felt a little nausted during my run. This happens sometimes when I am pushing myself hard. Though usually I recover pretty quickly, though tonight at 2 hours past my run I am still feeling this way. I was able to eat a cup of greek yogurt with rasberries mixed in, but I still have another 400 to 600 calories to eat tonight. But my stomach is protesting NOOOO. What would you all do, let yourself go low on calories for the day or force yourself to eat. At this point the only thing that sound good right now is some plain toast.... This happens everyonce and while to me and since I am trying to be better at eating enough calories for my activity level and fuel my body for my harder workouts I want make sure that I do it right...
