Ok, so I just received an email from our "company cardiologist". Our company has a Wellness Dept and hired a highly qualified cardiologist as it's director. I've been emailing him every 5 or 10 pounds and give him a progress report because it was one of his lunchtime lectures that started me on my way. You said (and I feel the same way) you too were nearing the end of your weight loss and were wondering about maintaining it and asked if I had any ideas. Well I just heard from Dr. Bernie and this is what he said to me:

"Sometimes hard work and commitment are rewarded. I think we can say that about your weight management program. It is not the 5 more pounds you need to lose as much as it is the 35 pounds you lost already that's the success. You need to believe in yourself and your success. You have made a life style change that will pay dividends in both quality and longevity of life. Remember that every day is a challenge to maintain the healthy life style you adopted. You need to be positive and happy with yourself. I am happy for you!! Dr. Bernie"

Hope this helps. I've printed the email and put it on my refrigerator and also on my cubicle wall at work so I can remember what he said and be re-inspired when I need it.

Good luck to all of us!!!

Thanks for stopping by my sparkpage. I'm scared of maintenance also. In answer to your question, what I did differently this time was to eat real foods, not diet foods (such as regular calorie white bread not "lite bread" because I like white bread and it tastes better) and this way when I'm done "reducing", I'm not hopping up to the bread I love and lose control. I just don't have it every day. I've cut back to having bread 3 times a week, pasta twice a week, stuff like that. This way it becomes a lifestyle change instead of a diet which will then require another change once you're done.

Myself and another spark member "4A-BETTER-BMI" wrote to SparkGuy (the owner of this site) and requested that he include a maintenance section here at Spark People. He wrote back to me and assured me that this is what they are working on right now. I think it might help if you emailed him as well. I think the more people write to him, the more he'd give it the attention and urgency that it needs. We need a maintenance program, a maintenance message board, and maintenance articles, tips, etc. Sparkpeople.com is a wonderful tool but it's currently incomplete in this respect.

We CAN do this though. We need to keep journaling our food, that's a very important tool, and keep up with the exercise. Those two items are the key, I'm sure of it.

Anyhow, wow, you made a great accomplishment. 37 pounds lost!! yahoo!!!!

Saw your comment on another page about being afraid of hitting goal and maintaining. You have the knowledge to do that, it is what you have been doing all along on this journey. Just keep doing what you have been doing with a few minor adjustments, like increasing your calories to not lose anymore. Then never let yourself go more than 3-5 lbs over your goal weight. If you do, then you buckle down for a couple of weeks and get back at it. You can do it....look what you have accomplished so far! Something that so many people are unable to do.
