Today, May 20, we finished the 5% Spring 2016 Challenge. I was so hoping to get to the 5% Loss, but, unexpected medical problems prevented me from doing so. It was determined that there is a large, dense calcification near my rotator cuff and I can barely move my left arm and shoulder. It has been very painful, and I have to keep my arm in a sling for about 6 weeks. I was given a cortisone shot, hoping it will dissolve the calcium. If not, I will need to have my shoulder operated, which is not successful in most cases.
So, now, I am hoping every night to get a few hours of sleep. I did not during the first 8 days and still feel like a Zombie, although I had about 5 hours of sleep three nights ago, about 3 hrs. the night before last, but....about 6 hrs. last night. There is HOPE!

Update, June 3, 2016: I am sleeping so much better, now. Even have some range of motion in my shoulder. Returned to the Orthopedic Surgeon: No golf for the next 4 weeks. Can start with Physical Therapy next week. However, I had a bad time with AFIB this week, saw the Cardiologist and will be going through a slew of tests. No swimming, either. Even walking is difficult. For somebody who was always healthy and very active, this is so hard to deal with.

May 25, 2017.
I just returned back from Germany, my former home, after not having seen most of my family in 13 years. My husband passed away in Feb. and my children insisted that this would be a good time to see my sisters and brother. I had a glorious time. I also saw several cousins and my 97-year old godmother. With all the family celebrations I attended, I was surprised to return with only 1# gained. Now, I have to get used to the 9-hour time change, going through all the mail, unpacking, and getting organized.
Having lost about 15# since last May, I, immediately, returned to healthier food and my weight-loss journey. I purchased lots of fruit and vegetables, yesterday, and hope to lose a few more pounds. I have no definite goal in mind, just want to feel as good as I can at my age.

I can't believe we just started the 2017Fall Challenge. After selling our vacation home in Lake Tahoe, in late August, after 25 years, I have been busy ever since, trying to dispose of furniture, household goods and clothes from the entire family. It was an overwhelming job, and lots of the goods ended up in my large garage in Reno. Slowly, very slowly, I am disposing of a lot of items and give myself until Christmas to complete the job. However, at this point, I am not convinced it will happen. It's hard with my sons living so far away, although they helped me to move out of the Lake house, up to a point, for which I am very grateful. I am giving everything to different charities, and was able to get rid of a large load this week. I still have a closet full of sweaters, shirts, suits and pants from my husband that will be a project for this coming week, I hope.
This new challenge couldn't come fast enough. I am still bordering at around 150#, only slipped into the 140s very briefly, but hope to find a permanent spot in the 140s, before the challenge ends.
May we all reach our goals, eventually.

My Goals:
Still trying to get solidly into the 140s. Maybe, the fall challenge will help me to achieve it.
I continue to eat lots of fruit and vegetables, more vegetables at this points, and reduce my carb intake as much as possible. Protein and healthy fat are my friends, at this point.

My Program:
Continue to eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Eat protein 2 - 3 times a day, and work on drinking more water. Work out, almost daily, but no less than 5 days a week.

Personal Information:
I was born and grew up in Germany. Curiosity prompted a visit to the US and I never left. I am married to the love of my life. We have two sons and four grand daughters. In Aug. 2011, I celebrated 50 years in the US. Hard to believe. I had total hip replacement surgery in July 2010. I love walking, skiing, golfing, and swimming, When home, I work out with a trainer, twice a week, mainly strength training, to stay as active as I can.

Marlis- my surgery of Feb. 16 went well. I have been home recovering, with a few bumps. I go back to M D Anderson this week to hear a treatnent plan. Charlie is back to playing 9, sometimes 18, holes of golf. We are both a bit physically fragile but moving forward. Take good care of yourself. Hugs, Laurel emoticon

My brother in law sent pictures of the huge amounts of snow in his backyard in Reno. It's beautiful, but I would not like to deal with it. Pace yourself as you deal with all the snow. emoticon
