I don't know what your doctor recommended but I read WHY WE GET FAT AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT by Gary Taubes and he has a NO SUGAR/NO STARCH Diet in appendix 1. It's a low carb diet where you get your carbs from non-starch veggies, and you avoid sugars (even limits fruit). When I stick to it, the pounds melt off. It's worth looking at. I don't believe in low-carb diets that advocate lots of healthy fat...I still limit my fat and fall well within Spark limits.
