Love to Dance?

I LOVED dancing for thousands at MILWAUKEE BUCKS basketball games, with Seniorgee, a team of 20 dancers, aged 60 to 80. We rocked the house to screams & standing ovations from fans. I was on the team from Day One, for 5 seasons. My jersey for 2010-2011, read "BSUE 69", my nickname & age. Team sponsor, Village at Manor Park, promotes the team with the slogan, "You're Never Too Old To Play".

Team sponsor, Village at Manor Park, promotes the team with the slogan, "You're Never Too Old To Play".

I dropped out, to prepare for selling our house and relocating to Nashville, Tennessee.

My final performance in Milwaukee was December 30th, 2011, when we welcomed the new year by dancing the Electric Slide, Cupid Shuffle, Dougie, Wobble and Party Rock, in a big free-for-all mob scene, with Energee (sexy Bucks dancers like us, only younger). Seniorgee has sent me on my way with flowers, hugs, kisses and tears. Great friends.

SparkPeople has helped me maintain 65% of my weight loss. I'm working to improve that number. Back in the 1970's I wore a Weight Watchers pin with 9 diamonds in it, signifying a 100-lb weight loss. I worked for them for 5 years, teaching eight classes a week by the time I left. My highest documented weight was 238, and I'm 5 feet 0 inches petite.

Exercise was not a prioity until the summer of 2003, when I discovered tap dancing. I have since studied tap, ballet, street jazz, pole dancing, and hip hop.

The back story about my exercise started in 2002. I was suffering with pain caused by spondelolysis. Small openings in vertabrae 4 & 5 led to pressure on the sciatic nerve, which caused shooting pains (about every 5 minutes while standing) down my right leg, from hip to foot.

Doctors threatened me with "fusion" (the surgical kind, not the dancing kind). It all came to a head for me, emotionally, in January of 2003, when they told me to lose weight and exercise (or else) and sent me home with a diet and a back brace. By that summer when I began my first dance class, I had lost 18 lbs. The pain subsided enough, as I continued losing weight and dancing, to allow me to escape surgery.

In 2005 I found Michelle, an accomplished dancer AND an expert in pilates. We used pilates techniques and pilates equipment classes, to strengthen my core and back muscles. The corrections removed pressure on the sciatic nerve. No more shooting pains. I am grateful for that experience.

I was born May 3, 1942 in a little coal-mining town in the Appalachian mountains of Lee County, Virginia. I think it's cool that James Brown, the late godfather of soul, was born on my birthday, in a different year. He's been described as someone who started with nothing and rocked the WORLD! I am a cheerleader for the underdog, and hard-working people like him inspire me to go after my own goals.

I don't think it's wise for people to tell themselves that they have one big chance in life, like they say on those competitive TV shows like "Idol", and that if they blow it, they are "excrement out of luck". "All or nothing" is not our only option.

I enjoy examples of people who keep at it. Another person I admire because she has achieved far beyond what anyone could have imagined, mainly because of her tenacity, is my 5th cousin, Dolly Parton. Although we have never met, we are directly descended from the same great-great-great-great grandfather, Henry Bohannon, from the Smoky Mountains. I lived in the Smokies with Granny Rose from ages 6 through 9. My parents had gone "up north" to Kalamazoo, Michigan to find work and get their marital act together.

My goal is to maintain a weight that is healthy, PERMANENTLY. I want to remain strong, flexible and injury-free as many years as possible. I also want to keep the weight down so that I don't serve as an EXCUSE for my daughters. I wouldn't want them to think they are destined to become obese because of my behavior.

My husband tells me it wasn't so much the FAT that had bothered him, but more the way I acted and felt about myself BECAUSE of the fat. When fat, I was openly insecure, easy to upset, not as playful. Sad, defeated, not much fun.

There continues to be something special about SparkPeople for me, whether I'm here posting or not. On March 5th, 2008 I was notified that the SparkPeople Community believed I was a motivation to others and that I was to be designated a SparkPeople MOTIVATOR. I hope that the Sparkies were right and that my story can be of help.

On May 10, 2010, I was recognized as SparkTeam LEADER OF THE MONTH for MAY, 2010. I was on a roll that month, apparently. Life has its "ups and downs". I have since been missing enough that friends message for me to come and say "Hi" because it's "Inactive Leader Day". You may be familiar with the notice SparkPeople posts when a team's leader has been missing for 60 days. (smile)

I do much better when I'm here than when I'm not. Knowing that, one would think I would be here every day, wouldn't one? Boggles the mind.

The great news is that I personally finished cleaning up that big house in Wisconsin and it sold right away. The downsizing work from our years of "borderline hoarding" is completed. My husband is retired, and here we are, just outside Music City (aka Nashvegas), a very nice place to be.

July 1st of 2014 we moved into an 1100 sq ft apartment (each with our own walk-in closet and bathroom) in a gated community. Lah-de-dah. We have a swimming pool, exercise room, club house, tennis court, enjoyable neighbors, and no yard work to do. Keeping the place clean is easy because it's small. It stays clean enough that visitors could drop by at any time. Too many possessions was a burden that I am relieved to have put down.

We attend a weekly tap-dancing class, and I'm working to lose a few more pounds so that my costume for the recital fits better. Sound familiar? I'm still wearing my Fitbit, to help with my goal of 10,000 steps or more daily. I walked more than 7 miles in the St Jude's Music City Half Marathon before the tail vehicle caught up to me. I could have walked the full 13.1 miles, but we had a time limit. The cars wanted their road back.

When we first got to Tennessee, I felt like I was in prison. Too much time following around a bored, newly retired husband and too little time to myself. It was also a problem that he wanted to eat out every day, and I didn't. It was a struggle, and we're doing better now that we've each begun doing some things on our own. He is especially happy about being here. It feels like home to him because he was born right up the road near the Buffalo Valley exit of I-40 in Putnam County.

NOTE: TO SEE ME DANCE WITH MY TEAM, LOOK ON YOUTUBE. Search for "Seniorgee" or "Senior-Gee" at http:\\www.youtube.com. Lots of performances from my 5 years are still there.

LOL! Sure did miss ya. Yellow ink works best on paper. You can write out all your secrets, and nobody will ever be willing or able to read them! :)

Yikes, I've been M.I.A. this month. We got pool in our backyard. Went swimming today and got sunburnt, but only on the top half of my gazongas. Already starting to itch.

P.S. I learned how to crochet a couple of weeks ago! I took a "let us guess your age" quiz online today, and they guessed 54. I'm 32. So, yeah.

Hi Barbara, I just wanted to stop by and welcome you to the Middle Tennesse Sparks team. I live in Crossville, but come to Nashville a lot.

My husband just retired last June and we moved to Tennessee full-time the next day! He also likes to eat out a lot and I prefer eating at home where I can get healthier foods.

We have begun dancing since we moved here. We've taken about six months of ballroom dancing classes. Those classes have stopped for the summer, but will pick up again in the fall. Right now, we are learning line dancing and are going to a weekly beginning line dancing class.

I'm glad you are beginning to find your nitch in Nashville.

Hugs,
Kay

PS...I forgot to add....we moved here from Barrington, IL, but I grew up in Nashville and have always considered Nashville my "home." I hope you learn to love it there.
