I finally got to see The Grand Canyon in 2009!
My hubby, our son (the new graduate), and me--in May of 2010
Geryn and I at the pottery studio. We love working with clay!
It took me a long time to put on this much weight. I know it will be a long journey to take it off. But, with all the help from SparkPeople, I finally think it is possible.
In 2012, I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and have to use a CPAP machine every night. Of course, this is related to being over weight. In 2011, I was diagnosed with 4 cervical herniated disks and the doctor was recommending removal of and fusion of the 2 most involved disks. Each time I went in, he examined my neck to see if he could access the spine (through my fat!) He always said my neck was fine for surgery, but he did have to share that I would be at greater risk of stroke due to my weight.
I worked very hard with physical therapy to avoid surgery an am grateful I have done so thus far. But, my symptoms can recur at any time and the bone spurs will never go away. I have tried losing weight in so many ways but was never able to stick with it. Then, I heard about SparkPeople from a good friend who was just mentioning how it helped her to see how she needed more protein--that it might help her have more energy later in the day. I checked it out, just out of curiosity, signed up right then (on Sept 15, 2012) and haven't looked back since! I just keep telling myself "I have to do this!"
I really want to lose weight and get back into shape so I can do my pottery for years to come. I want to be able to go on a wilderness camping trip to Boundary Waters and to perhaps ski again. I would like to live a long and healthy life and have my family be proud of me. My son is a personal trainer and is in incredible shape. I feel embarrassed for both of us when he introduces me to someone new at his work. I figure they must be surprised to see that his mother is so out of shape. I used to be rather athletic and in shape, but that was over 20 years ago! I really want to enjoy each day starting now, but If my husband and I are ever so lucky to have grandchildren, I want to be around and to be healthy enough to enjoy them.
Right now, the thing that is helping me the most is the SparkPoints list. I skim down that every day to be sure I do the things I find are important to me and that I enjoy. The first three things on the SparkPoints list are always important to me, and I always enjoy the trivia question and the quiz. I've learned so much from just those! But the articles are so good and the emails help to keep me on track...
I have to admit that, for some unknown reason, I just love to spin that wheel ;-) especially the bigger one after getting 25 points. Whoever designed that knew what they were doing, ha ha ha. It keeps me coming back...and it makes us all winners! ;-)
For now, I get most of my fitness minutes on Wii Fit. I broke my foot a couple of years ago and do not like walking outside in the winter for fear of falling again. I hope to add swimming soon!
Hi, my name is Bev Haas. I live in Solon, Iowa which is halfway between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. I am currently at home and my husband of 25 years has just joined me since he retired in Jan. 2013. Yay! Of course, I may now have to go back to work just to keep us both sane, ha ha ha (I'm actually kidding--partly). I have worked as a medical and psychiatric social worker and, more recently, as a pottery teacher. I stopped teaching pottery so I could spend more time on my own pottery, but have had physical challenges and other home projects that have put pottery in the back seat for stretches at a time
