What kind of name is BearClaw?

Ever wonder why you are hungry all the time even though your tracker says you are over your calorie limit for the day? Get drousy after lunch? I was that person, once. I am that person no more. I avoid foods that make me hungry. I avoid foods that make me fat. I avoid most grains and potates. I eat meat, vegetables, nuts and cheese. I am rarely hungry and yet I have control of my weight.

I avoid foods that make me hungry. I avoid foods that make me fat. I avoid most grains and potates. I eat meat, vegetables, nuts and cheese. I am rarely hungry and yet I have control of my weight.

A few of years ago at my age 40 physical my doctor told me that there wasn't anything he could find wrong with me other than the fact that I was overweight. He then went on to tell me that I was very lucky and he was certain that he would not be telling me the same thing at age 50. My wife showed me a curious book in the summer of 2010 by a guy named Gary Taubes (Good Calories, Bad Calories) that went into great detail about what is wrong with the Western diet and why we all get heart disease and diabetes. This got me thinking. Then....a good friend of mine died in September 2010 from complications of Type I diabetes. While I realize that his condition was very different from the condition that will probably be my fate should I continue eating high-carb, high-calorie meals, it does get a guy to think even more!! So here I am, cutting out potatoes, white grains, pasta and most fruit while I pretty much eat all the eggs, cheese, meat and veggies I want.

My Goals:
Lose some weight, get my HDLs up and generally improve my health.

Healthy eating....In other words, low carb. Based loosely on the Atkins diet but without taking the stages of the diet too seriously.

Personal Information:
An Oregon native, I spent half my life in Seattle before moving to Boston in 2009. Fat since I was five years old (with a short stint as a fit bicycle fiend in my mid-twenties), I have spent most of my life in an intense love affair with sugar.

Just wanted to say I appreciate your comments on the saturated fat thread. It does help to have scientists comment on these issues, it does add a needed perspective.

Loved your thoughts on diet soda expressed on the diet an nutrition forum! Then I read your page and some of your blog-posts. Very inspirational! I strive to eat a carbohydrate conscious diet as well. I think you may just have gained a new stalker ;)
