THE BODY WARRIOR PLEDGE
Because I understand that my love and respect for my body are metaphors of my love and respect for my self and my soul, I pledge to do the following:
To stop berating my body and to begin celebrating the vessel that I have been given. I will remember the amazing things my body has given me: the ability to experience the world with a breadth of senses, the ability to perceive and express love, the ability to comfort and soothe, and the ability to fight, provide, and care for humanity.
To understand that my body is an opportunity not a scapegoat.
To be the primary source of my confidence. I will not rely on or wait for others to define my worth.
To let envy dissipate and allow admiration to be a source of compassion by offering compliments to others.
To gently but firmly stand up for myself when someone says to me (or I say to myself) something harmful.
To change the inner-monologue in my head to one that sees possibility not problems, potential not shortcomings, blessings not imperfections.
To give my body the things that it needs to do its work well: plenty of water, ample movement, stretches, rest, and good nutrition, and limit or eliminate the things that do not nurture my body.
To see exercise as a way to improve my internal health and strength instead of a way to fight or control my body.
To understand that my weight is not good or bad. It is just a number, and I am only good.
To love my body and my self today. I do not have to weigh ten pounds less, have longer hair, or to have my degree in my hand to have worth. I have worth just as I am, and I embrace that power.
To recognize my body's strengths.
To no longer put off the things that I wish to experience because I am waiting to do them in a different body.
To understand that a body, just like a personality, is like a fingerprint: a wonderful embodiment of my uniqueness.
Every decision you make-Every Decision-is not a decision about what to do. It's a decision about WHO YOU ARE. When you see this, when you understand it, everything changes. You begin to see life in a new way. All events, occurrences and situations turn into opportunities to do what you came here to do.-Neale Donald Walsch
***My weight has fluctuated since a back injury in 2000; attempts to repair the damage failed, and I retired (medically) from the military. By 2002, I was at my heaviest: 243 lbs at 5'2" (a gain of 113 lbs; the combination of medication & a sedentary life style). Before being diagnosed with hypothyroidism (in 2007), I'd lost 84 lbs! I'm tired of feeling uncomfortable in my skin...feeling disconnected to the image reflected as I gaze into the mirror.
A self-proclaimed "work in progress", I've been smoke-free since November 30, 2008: ) After smoking for 10+ years, I was amazed by the positive changes within my body; it wasn't an easy, but if I can do it, so can YOU! Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but becoming a non-smoker is easier than any diet I've ever tried. One can learn to live without cigarettes, but the body requires food to survive!
I love meeting new people (SP friends are my extended family) and exchanging helpful information. As a recovering binge eater, I renew my commitment to health and REFUSE to give up: I can't allow food to control me. Determined to turn my goals into reality, I can't wait to meet the new me.***
BEFORE I WAS A MOM...
Before I was a Mom, I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby. I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous. I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom, I had never been puked on. Pooped on. Chewed on. Peed on. I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts. I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom, I never held down a screaming child so doctors could do tests. Or give shots. I never looked into teary eyes and cried. I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin. I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom, I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put her down. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop the hurt. I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much. I never knew that I could love someone so much. I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom, I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body...I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby. I didn't know that bond between a mother and her child. I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important and happy.
Before I was a Mom, I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay. I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom. I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much, before I was a Mom.
Poem by Audrey Hepburn
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.
A GREAT DAY
Today is a great day to be alive. The world is filled with positive possibilities, and those possibilities grow more numerous with each passing moment. Sure, there are challenges and disappointments and frustrations. And within those challenges, within those disappointments, are some of the greatest possibilities.
Today is a great day to be alive because today you can make things happen. You can set a goal, chart a course, take stock of your situation and use it to create new value. Pay no attention to those who claim to know how things will be. Your future is yours to determine, and this is the day to make it great.
You don't need anyone's permission to live with joy and fulfillment. You don't need to wait for certain circumstances to line up in a specific way. For today is a great day to be alive, to be productive, to be effective & to fulfill your best possibilities. And now is the moment to enthusiastically get busy making it all happen.-Ralph Marston
Believe in Yourself & Remember Anything Is Possible
Believe in what makes you feel good. Believe in what makes you happy. Believe in the dreams you've always wanted to come true, and give them every chance to.
Life holds no promises as to what will come your way. You must search for your own ideals and work towards reaching them.
Life makes no guarantees as to what you'll have. It just gives you time to make choices and to take chances and to discover whatever secrets might come your way.
If you are willing to take the opportunities you are given and utilize the abilities you have, you will constantly fill your life with special moments and unforgettable times.
No one knows the mysteries of life or its ultimate meaning, but for those who are willing to believe in their dreams and in themselves, life is a precious gift in which anything is possible.-Dena DiIaco
