Learning to deal

Here it is, one year into the diabetes diagnosis and still battling the beastie. Its sure not the journey I envisioned a year ago. I was sure that with diligent eating and weight loss that I would conquer this and reverse it. Right. This is one strange disease and not at all what I thought it was. I am now approaching a 90 lb weight loss. Not yet where I would like to be, but certainly closer than I was a year ago. I've settled into the diet/lifestyle as I understand it ...
I've settled into the diet/lifestyle as I understand it (currently) and am losing at a slow steady pace. Very happy with this. The diet is quite restrictive as I'm very, very insulin resistant so can't eat much in the way of carbs. I'm very limited in the fruits department, occasionally eathing some berries and very rarely a different piece of fruit. I eat mostly greens and meats and don't worry about the fats in the diet. I eat until satisfied and try to be very mindful of that sweet spot as its the point at which I can lose weight.
I've begun to wrap my head around the fact that I will always be a diabetic. My endocrinologist and I are still trying to find the right balance of meds to balance my glucose levels. This seems to change frequently. I will get great control with an additional med and that will last for a month or so. Then, it changes and starts creeping back up. This is a frustrating part of the disease. No singular magic pill to fight it. I'm such a control freak that it can drive me crazy. Trying to find an emotional balance in dealing with it all as stress is my BIG enemy.
Low carbing is the answer for me. Ultra low is best. Will see where the future takes me as I continue.

December, 2012 Update

I achieved a close weight loss to the 90 lb mark by getting a stomach virus. I'm maintaining just short of that. Trying to figure out the best way to approach the next 30 lbs. Would LOVE to arrive before I hit 60 yo. Thats in June. It would mean a weight loss of 5 lbs a month, which is doable, but hasn't been happening of late. I know I need to get consistent with the treadmill/bike, but that has become hard to do, of late. Real life has called upon me and is making consistency difficult. I CAN do it, but have to really focus. It would be a HUGE achievement for me to get to the 120 lb loss by my 60th. I would be a NORMAL weight which I haven't been in many, many years. Just have to wonder if my blood glucose will normalize when I get there? Worth trying for, for sure!

Yeah, I miss the old team. It's getting kinda hard to find a team thats as active as our's was. I'm trying to get motivation from here and I am on loseit.com, but I mostly track from food and exercise on it. I'll be checking in on ya again.

Hugs!!

Thanks for the link! I filled out the form on the page and was told that I should eat 74 grams of protein a day derived form 12 ounces of protein. Very cool. Thanks again!

Congratulations on the A1C! I'm new to your page; I found it by searching for others who have tried the Bernstein plan.

I've only been on it a week, but some of the thoughts you expressed reflect my own. (Change from low calorie and being FULL on so little food, for instance.)

I don't know how much weight I'll lose, but the glucose readings are wonderful.

Again, congratulations!

Deb
