Days To Go: Medoc Marathon

Sept. 11, I'll start mile one of my first marathon. I'll be in France with my two sisters. The course will flow through Bordoux wineries; the aid stations will offer wine in glassware.

The burning question is: Will I make it?

The burning question is: Will I make it?

Odds against:

I'm 35 pounds overweight, which is like carrying a microwave while you run.

My foot is injured from last summer's racing.

I'm inconsistent, sometimes lazy, serially obsessive, and getting myself out the door for a run is often harder than getting myself to do the taxes.

The odds for:

I did a half marathon last summer, and although I finished last and the organizers had removed the port-a-poddies along the route by the time I passed, and had nearly removed the cookie and juice at the finish line, and two darling ambulance drivers tried to pick me us, I finished stronger than I expected, ran the whole way, and felt elated.

I'm tenacious. I have pretty good natural muscle tone. I've got several friends who run and inspire me.

I'll be writing a blog about the training.

Let the challenge begin.

With regard to the Medoc Marathon... Hello! They are offering wine at the aid stations. So chances are, if you dont make the whole race, you will be too tipsy to care and you will have a good time trying. emoticon

Do you know of John Bingham known as "The Penguin". He is famous for telling stories about running last in the marathons and has written many books about running for the common man.

The only time I ran the full marathon I started limping at mile 13 and the "sweep cop" pulled up behind me and asked me what I wanted to do. Since I have 13 more miles to limp and I knew that I could not keep ahead of him I would have to run on the sidewalk which was full of spectators and would be very difficult so I took the bus back to the finish line. I felt ashamed and very embarrassed. Everyone that I trained with finished but me. I was however, the oldest, I am now 69. This was four years ago.

It changed my training strategy since I knew I needed to maintain a pace of 15 min/mile to keep ahead of the "Sweep Cop". I have only run half marathons since.

At the YMCA Half Marathon I came in last and received a sweep award. There were several of us than ran marathons at work (Arizona State University). I was the only one with an award which I proudly displayed above my desk. I would show it to people by placing my thumb over the phrase "sweep award" as a gag. I have won that award twice. The first time was a small plastic plaque and the second time a medal.

I also won a silver medal at the Runner's Den Half Marathon in my age group. When I looked up the other runners it turned out there were only two of us so this award is also FOR LAST PLACE. I get a good laugh out this medal as well. I mention I won a second place medal and some friend or family member will clarify that there were only two people running so this has been fun too.

I am retired now. I walk on a treadmill for one hour twice a week without fail. I hope to eventually add the long run once a week as well. When I can do that I hope to improve my time.

Spend half hour a week running much faster than your usual pace and your running pace will improve.

You look hot in Duct Tape by the way.
