Deb's Journey

Wow-I haven't been active on Sparkpeople for quite some time but am determined to get back to where I was a couple of years ago. What have I been up to? Wow-I haven't been active on Sparkpeople for quite some time but am determined to get back to where I was a couple of years ago. What have I been up to? Well I went to grad school and am now a nurse practitioner working in an urgent care center. In the middle of school I was hit head on while on my bicycle by a large commercial vehicle and sustained lots of bumps and bruises but more problematic was the mild traumatic brain injury (aka concussion). I am still recovering from the accident but determined to get back in shape and get some of my ongoing medical issues from the accident under control so I can enjoy things I used to be able to do like ride my bicycle and work on my bee hives.

Here is some background info on why I started Sparkpeople in the first place: I realized in the spring of 2009 that my weight had reached both an unhealthy level and one that I wasn't comfortable with anymore. Historically, I have always been physically active and not had trouble keeping my weight at a healthy level. I believe that my downfall began when I switched careers from nursing to real estate-from on my feet all day to sitting at a desk or driving people around. This combined with my previously unhealthy predisposition to eat unhealthy foods (chocolate, ice cream, and anything sweet) was not good for my overall health for sure.

It took the scales hitting an all time high weight for me to wake up and smell the coffee. Luckily, between hypnosis and sparkpeople I had all the tools and assistance I needed to start the journey back to good health. The hypnosis helped with my food binges, to the point I no longer even have the desire to sit down and eat multiple portions of foods that are not healthy for me. Sparkpeople was wonderful and helped me stay on track, but most importantly to keep track of how much I was actually consuming.

My Goals:
To maintain my weight between 130 lbs and 135 lbs. To become more physically active, stronger and faster on my road bike. Finally, I really want to be able to run again. I am going to start trying to run a short distance each work out and see how my knees tolerate it.

My Program:
Counting calories and exercising regularly. I am a nurse, so I know what I should eat, I just need to stick with it. I also need to be more consistent with my exercise. I try to get at least some exercise every day that I'm not working (4 days a week).

Personal Information:
I'm a mom, a wife and work full time as a nurse practitioner.

My interests are cycling, gardening, beekeeping, reading, I volunteer as a Master Gardener for the county I live in. I also love taking my dogs for walks and even run a little when my knees feel up to it.

Hi Deb!!!! How great it is to hear from you! I thought you were all through with SP; I just re-friended you.

I've had a lot of ups and downs but hopefully have learned a few things throughout. I'm still far away from my goal but am working on changes that will stick. One thing for sure, I'll never diet again!

I'd love to hear how you're doing whenever you get some time to write. I love your profile pic - you look terrific!

P.S. How are your bees? My husband's been having some problems over the past few years and went from 5 hives to 1. We still get plenty of honey from that hive - good thing because all our friends and relatives look forward to getting our honey.

Thanks so much for your prayers, Deb. This is the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with in life thus far. It's caring friends like you who keep me going. Janet's suffering is over and I'm glad of that, but I miss her so much that my heart aches and can't be consoled right now. I know that time heals and that she'll always be alive in my heart.

Take care, Mary
