Hi! I’m Becky, the Registered Dietitian with Sparkpeople. I live on my “family farm” in southern Indiana with my husband, daughter, and son. It is a small rural community. The closest fast food restaurant is 20 miles away and the nearest shopping mall requires a 50 minute drive. Yes, it is slightly slower-paced, but a pace that I cherish.

I enjoy working in my vegetable garden, preparing new recipes, sewing, and walking in my woods with my canine companions, Roxie and Cassius. My children will tell you that I am fixated on eating meals together as a family at the kitchen table. This is often the only chance to connect and catch-up. It is a time to comfort the pains of the day and celebrate the joys of living.

I also admit that I am a techno-nerd. I do not Twitter. I cannot Facebook. Heck, I don’t even own a cell phone. However, I do enjoy connecting with others at Sparkpeople as we journey together to improve our health. So join me, as we:

Ignite our inner fire,
Fuel the blaze daily,
And spread the SPARK to others.

Nutritionally Yours, Dietitian Becky

Food Forests are a very cool method of permaculture food growing that involves planting several layers, from edible ground covers to shrubs/short trees, then high trees, support plants, climbers, etc. You essentially wind up foraging in your own backyard! These guys are doing well with it: http://www.happyearth.com.au/a-forest-of-f
ood/ -- I can't wait until we can get started.

Thank you for responding. I do not track in the nutrition log on SP because it takes way too long. I have a separate journal/ tracking book that I bought at my gym. I lose more weight when my calorie range is 1000. My friend who has to lose 10 lbs joined SP and has the same calorie range of 1200+-1600+. I just started tracking this year 2010 because I hate to track it is a lot of work. I am getting much better at it. I burn between 700-900 calories at the gym 4-5 days a week. I lose more if I don't exercise. I would lose a ton if I could start breastfeeding again ( but that is not going to happen). I just feel it is taking a long time to get into the 180's. I just feel there is something different I need to do. Thank You! Janet

Thanks for chiming in on the coffee debate! I love that you raise your own food and are living simply. My hubby and I are passionate about that too. We're planning a "Food Forest" for our new house, as well as a chicken run. Have a great week!

Hello fellow sparker!! I wanted to ask if the calorie range in the spark diet is right for me?? I have about 70 lbs to lose. 1200+-1600+ is what the calories placed in the nutrition part. I want to lose about 5lbs a month, where do you think my calorie range should be?? Thanks. Janet emoticon
