CHANGING FOR THE BETTER

UPDATE: 2/5/2014 Tested blood pressure this week - it's NORMAL! Whoo-hooo! and weight is coming down too! Though I am taking a break from sparkpeople I am still continuing with the Eat to Live plan and checking in here from time to time. In June 2013 I was diagnosed with extremely high blood pressure. I did not want to do meds without first trying to change my lifestyle. The doctor suggested going 'vegan' - and within weeks my blood pressure dropped considerably and after a few months my blood pressure is almost normal.

I have been looking for a community of support to help with making this a true lifestyle change - not just an on again/off again attempt. This looks like it might be the place!

It's good to hear from someone who has successfully regulated their blood pressure without meds. I was told that I had pre-hypertension and pre-diabetes a couple of months ago. Can you say wake up call? I've had my ups and downs, but with more physical activity, less salt, and more conscientious eating, it does seem to be coming down, and monitoring it daily, it becomes evident what factors have significant impact (such as too much salt). I don't know if I'll ever go vegan, but I have cut down on my consumption of meat, I rarely eat fast food as it's loaded with salt, and I buy more organic produce. As much as I love food and cooking, making a lifestyle change vs being on a diet is definitely a challenge, but I would venture to say it's less challenging than a stroke or a heart attack and worth the effort to make a change!

Thanks for your comments! And you're so right. I am trying to adapt a healthy plan to fit my lifestyle and tastes. But I am also trying to ajust my tastes!

Thank you for reading my blog and leaving those kind words. Today has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions, and I just gave in to the cravings. Tomorrow is another day, and hopefully I'll do better. Hopefully my Sophie will feel better too. Thanks again for your comments.
