I'm ready

I'm a 41-year old father of three, and I started with SP August 2009 because I needed help getting my weight under control. I reached my goal weight of 155 pounds (a loss of 122 pounds) in late 2010, and am working on maintaining in the 155-160 pound range.

I have the support of my kids and my wonderful wife, L3DESIGNS, who is my inspiration and who started on her SparkPeople journey seven months before I did and is getting ever closer to her goal weight.

When I started I used the stationary bike, then started walking, and then started running. I've completed a 5K, a 10K, and a Half Marathon, and my wife has also run her first. My second Half was the Disney Princess Half at Disneyworld (Florida) in February 2011, however I walked it due to a stress fracture.

If you're new to SP and are just starting out, here are a couple blogs that I wrote with some overview material from what I've done here to date. If they help, great!

Increase my energy level

Enjoy life!

My Program:
The boring stuff: diet & exercise. I track everything.

I started out walking, graduated to running, completed one Half Marathon, walked a second due to injury, then ran my third.

I've started (and stopped) Insanity four times now, but in each case running took over...

Apparently I can be somewhat of a Cardio junkie!

Personal Information:
40, married for 13 years, with one son (10), two daughters (8 & 5). I'm an Electrical Engineer doing IC design, and live in Coquitlam, BC, Canada.

Other Information:
Engineering is the art of optimization, trading off a number of different costs to come up with the best solution. Never forget that your time has a cost.

Hi Bill,

I am currently drafting a blog that is a rant about the demise of the 26Ē mountain bike. I did indeed start out taking a lot of photos of my Nimble 9 build. However, I was hobbling around on a cast after my ankle surgery and it was all I could do to build the bike. Besides, I realized getting too in-depth would result in a lengthy tutorial on how to build a bike, including the advantages and disadvantages of certain frame geometries, wheel sizes and how to optimize component selection. In other words, I didnít take a lot of photos either!

I agree that certain components really contribute to the feel of the bike. I didnít cut corners on Nimby on critical items. But I didnít break the bank, either. Like you, I could have spent 3x on drivetrain components. 5x on the handlebars, stem and seatpost. However, the tires, saddle and front fork are top-end. The drivetrain is Shimano XT. The brakes are Shimano XT Ice Tech. The handlebars, stem and seatpost are cold drawn, perfectly machined from 7075 aluminum, and flawlessly finished in matt black with gloss black highlights. These components are from the Turbine line made by Race Face.

The chain is a modestly priced KMC X10.93 that is strong and durable. The headset is a value-priced Cane Creek 40 series. Lock-on ODI Rogue grips are comfortable and affordable at $17.

I have two brands of tires that I buy, which are Kenda and Maxxis. The Kenda Small Block 8 is a great tire. I have Kenda Slant 6 on my cross bike and John Tomac signature Kenda Nevegals on Little Cam.

Thanks, Bruce

You need to move south some...we have excellent bike-riding weather now.

But if they agreed, that's all that matters. Right?

Hi Bill,

No, this is not an ďApril FoolĒ joke. We really did get buried with snow.

Thanks, Bruce

Geez, that's a long time to wait. Take care. Don't over do. I know how easy that is to say but very tough to do.
