Fit before Fifty - The goal of a Lap Bander
I have had a lapband since 11/07/05. I had several years of maintaining my ideal weight of 135 and then was overfilled in 2009 and got down to 107 lbs which was way to thin for me. At that point I had all the fill removed in order to gain back to 135. Problem is I kept on going and ended up at 172 before going in to get a fill. Found out at that time a fill was not possible due to port flipping and had to have surgery to reposition the port on 12/08/10. I started all over again from ground ...

At that point I had all the fill removed in order to gain back to 135. Problem is I kept on going and ended up at 172 before going in to get a fill. Found out at that time a fill was not possible due to port flipping and had to have surgery to reposition the port on 12/08/10. I started all over again from ground zero and began gaining instead of loosing all the way up to 213 lbs. I have had a few fills but continue to have no restriction thus far.
9/01/13 I decided to try something else instead of depending on my band to do it for me. Today I am 3 lbs heavier than I was when I hadlap band surgery. I am working on counting calories and adding exercise into my daily routine. I am coming to sparkpeople for support along the way and am finding that the nutrition and food tracker are very helpful. Perhaps this is what I need in conjunction with the band. I do know that I can always have the band filled if i hit a plateau along the way, but more than anything this time around I am learning that food choices, portion control, and planning make all the difference!
Update - On October 17, 2013 I had a very successful lap band fill (First fill in 2 years). I now have a good amount of restriction and am finally making some progress. The band is a great tool to work with, but making the right eating choices and exercising regularly really does make all the difference!
Update - On November 21, 2013 I had another fill and think I have finally arrived at the perfect fill amount. I have restriction and am limited to small portions. In combination with my work out plan I have lost 15 pounds so far and am finally back in the 100's weighing in at 198 and going down!
Update - December 10, 2013 I am down to 191 and am continuing to loose. I think my band may be a little tight as I am needing to stick with mostly soft foods. My next follow-up appointment is on January 17. However, if I feel that I am not getting sufficent nutrition or fluids I will call to move that appointment up to have some fill removed. It has been nice to not be tempted by all the holiday goodies that are around.
