We now live in Seattle! We sold our house and our only car and headed west. Far west. In fact, you can't get much farther west in the Lower 48, and the grandparents aren't exactly thrilled that the only grandkids on both sides are now 2500 miles away!

On the plus side, I've lost weight and gained a LOT of muscle and endurance. No car = walking tons, even with the bus system. We're in the process of saving to buy a bike trailer to haul the kids in, so I'm hoping this summer we ...

On the plus side, I've lost weight and gained a LOT of muscle and endurance. No car = walking tons, even with the bus system. We're in the process of saving to buy a bike trailer to haul the kids in, so I'm hoping this summer we won't even need to use the bus except to go downtown.

I didn't make my initial goal of doing a triathlon before 30, so I'm now aiming to do one before 31. Having two children who both sleep through the night consistently plus living in a city where it pretty much never snows should dramatically increase my chances of success. :-)

Two major changes:

1. No car means I have to carry all of my groceries home. I sometimes bring a little collapsible grocery cart, but for the most part, everything we eat has been literally hauled home in my backpack. This has dramatically reduced impulse buys!

2. We have to walk. Everywhere. It's 1/4 mile just to the nearest bus stop, so at minimum, we all walk half a mile a day, and most days it's a lot more than that. When we first moved out here, it was killer. Now, I have a 4-year-old who routinely walks 2+ miles a day and it doesn't even slow him down. My 19-month-old can do up to 1 mile in a day. We are most definitely a more active family than we were in Cincinnati! The hills around here add to the challenge. :-)

My Goals:
1. Eat fresh fruit and/or vegetables with every meal.

2. Walk/run/bike 20 miles per week. Swim 1 day per week.

3. Track all my exercise.

4. Complete a sprint tri by age 31 (August 2013), either as part of an organized race or "virtual" (do everything in 1 day, but as an individual and posted to a site, rather than as part of an organized race).

My Program:
1. Live in a walking- and biking-friendly city without a car.

2. Set modest exercise goals - rather than committing to so many days of cardio, for example, I commit to the following per week: 1 day of yoga, 1 day of swimming during C's swim class, and at least 1 bike ride. Everything else is for fun.

Personal Information:
I've lived in 6 states, but currently call Seattle, WA, home, as of August, 2012!

Other Information:
I'm a SAHM, a mechanical engineer, a swimmer, a weight-lifter, a would-be runner (working on this one!), a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a lover, a friend, but most of all...
I am myself.

Thank you for your kind words on my "Feeling Normal" blog. I am glad you happened to stumble on it. What you said makes a lot of sense and just like anything else I can only compare myself to myself for measure of progress.

Hello.... New to the site and am on this journey of losing weight!! I saw your snack ideas on the message board and am really looking forward to trying them. I am having a hard time coming up with ideas and that is where I usually end up failing with my diets. Thank you for sharing... emoticon

Just so you know I came across something you said in the forums
"If you were diabetic or gluten-intolerant, no one would give you a hard time about not eating a huge plate of pasta, so how is choosing to eat differently because you are trying to keep your weight down any different?"
I will always keep that statement in my mind forever now!! No need to be embarrassed about choosing a different way to eat!
Thanks for looking out for others!
