Sylvia's Place--Getting better one goal at a time!

Hi!
I'm Sylvia, wife of 1, mother of 8 and teacher of many. It's a good thing that I love kids because they have become my life, my hobby, my spare time activity and all. I am a reading teacher and it is fortunate that books are my next passion. I have Lady, my beloved basset hound, our daughter's pug Frankie, our son's doxieab Scooter, and our other son's Catahoula, Sadie.
We have guinea pigs, rabbits, several other little animals, and we take care of stray kitties who sadly find their way here. I don't have a lot of technology skills, so my page will stay a work in progress.

Getting my health under control is my big goal. I deal with a lot, especially from my arthritis and fibromyalgia, along with many surgeries that include four total joint replacements and surgeries on all of my major joints except my left hip, my left shoulder, and my right ankle--but I know that keeping this weight under control will give me the improved health I crave. Please feel free to join me on this journey. I achieved my goal weight in 2010 and having friendship and support along the way has been the best! However, after I lost the weight, I realized that I am now 2 1/2 inches shorter than I used to be and am working towards the BMI that matches my "revised height."

Now, I am trying to lose a bit more and really focus on keeping the habits that I have worked so hard to create. I have lost over 100 pounds maybe three times in my life, but keeping it off has never happened. This is the critical time for me. I need SparkPeople, their strategies, my Spark Friends now more than ever. My life is obviously quite busy, but I will come every day as long as the internet service is working just to help me stay in control and not lose sight of how healthy living really works.

I go to the pool every day that I don't have physical therapy. I am working on getting back to the fitness level I was at before my hip replacement in December, 2012. I am doing more and more each day--Not bad for someone who was still in a wheel chair until May of 2010!! I am absolutely committed to keeping the good health habits that have given my back my life and activities. I can't wait to enjoy camping and this summer's mini-vacations with my family. I will even fit in he rides at amusement parks. Things are looking so good for me--and they can for anyone else who is reading this too. You just have to take the time to do it right and then take one step at a time.

Thank you Spark People--you have given me a chance!! I can and will do this too!

My Goals:
I must maintain my weight loss and work towards a healthy BMI at my newly established height that is 2.5 inches shorter than I used to be. (159 is my new magic number!)

I cannot lose track of the good health practices that I have used and succeeded with to this point.

Exercise is critical to my health and I will continue to work out and seek out advice from the physical therapists and classes at the fitness center. I will follow my doctors' advice as well and I will take care of myself to the best of my ability.

My Program:
1. I will continue to use the nutrition tracker daily.

2. I will also use the fitness tracker daily .

3. I will do what I can to get adequate daily sleep.

4. I will make good choices about what goes into my mouth:
10 glasses of water
5-7 fruits/vegetables
Whole grains
Limited "empty" calories
Good portion sizes

5. I will be positive about my expectations and work to ease up on my day to day stress.

6. I will continue to be involved in the Spark community and visit Spark pages and Spark teams regularly.

Personal Information:
I am from the Illinois Quad Cities. For those reading who haven't a clue what that might mean, there is one place where the Mississippi River runs East to West. Around this area, Rock Island and Moline, Illinois and Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa have a friendly little community known as the Quad Cities.

Other Information:
Most of the things about me that make me who I am are in my introduction. I have a great life, messed up only by my health issues that are driving me to work on my weight loss. I have had weight issues my entire life, but am in a far better place than when I started here a few years ago.

I am a Christian and believe that through prayer, my Lord and Savior will guide me and help me to be the best I can be.

I love to help others and want anyone who has a question or need to contact me. I will do my best to help you with what you need either by tapping into my own knowledge and experience or by asking someone else. We are all in this together!

As a fellow educator, I very much know what you mean about what we can and cannot talk about. Here is something that I have gained by that reality and Spark. Because this is the place where I cannot talk about work, I have had to get more in touch with my other thoughts. I can never slightly talk about work... and so the space here is for the other chunk of me. Interesting what I have discovered because of that limitation.

Sorry to hear about your medical issues that are consuming your mind, heart, time. I hope things turn out ok... and that you end up having the time you want to blog or whatever :)

Take care,
Diane

Wow! You gave me a cruise! What a wonderful "Spring Break!" Thank you so very much! I have one more week off from school, but I sure have enjoyed the first half of my break thus far. I hope that you have a wonderful New Year!

Just a note to let you are in my prayers and thoughts. Take time for yourself, you are needed in your school, the children need you. The world is changing so fast. It appears that our leaders, no matter if they are in schools, hospitals or congress no longer are concerned with the welfare of the people. Whether you are a teacher, a nurse, a clerk or a young child the only concern is the financial bottom line. Classrooms are too crowded, violence is common, teachers have no support. Hospitals no longer provide enough staff to care for their patients and nurses are too busy to show compassion or understanding. Nurses and teachers go home at the end of their day or night physically and emotionally exhausted. Unable to relax or feel good about the work they do. The children are the ones that suffer, just as those in the hospital suffer because their nurse is too busy, carrying for so many patients that she can't provide them with the time they need to voice their fears, pains or needs. Those in charge need to stop, look and listen to what is going on in their work place. If they don't, their world will soon fall around their feet. I didn't mean to go off on a tangent. I too have felt the frustration of overcrowding and understaffing. Know that you are not alone. We must be strong and do what we can to help those who depend on us. We must take care of ourselves or we will not be able to help those who need us. Hugs Pat
