Reading The Spark has helped give me some new ideas for this journey. One is to clarify my weight loss goals.
First and foremost, I watch my diabetic family members (all overweight, all adult-onset) and don't want to be counted among them some day. I think of all the things they can't do or do with great difficulty because of their weight. Whenever I hike with a heavy pack, I think, "Is this what it's like to carry around 40 extra pounds of weight every single day?" and know that I don't want to get to that point, so I'm focusing on healthy habits now in order to prevent it.
Second, I love being in the outdoors - canoeing, hiking, walking, biking, gardening. I am able to do all of those things now and am thankful for it, but I want to be able to continue to do them plus do harder trips. For example, I hiked the Grand Canyon once and was the last one out of the canyon of the group and almost dead to boot. I did it, but could have done it more enjoyably.
Lastly, I got a taste of reaching my goals a few months ago when I was (briefly) highly committed to my workout goals. I was slimming down through the midsection, my main self-conscious spot. And I loved it! It felt great - no pants buttons poking me in the belly plus reduction of the muffin top! :) I liked that feeling and want to feel it every day. Plus, my back pain changed in that time - for the better.
My time is now!
We already walk the dog for at least 30 minutes every day. I will add another way of working out for 10 minutes every day.
Eat 5 servings of fruits/veggies per day.
Try to stick to one sweet treat per day.
Drink eight glasses of water per day.
I am trying to get to 140 pounds by Dec. 31, 2010.

Thanks for the speedy feedback. I actually just read it while drinking my morning breakfast smoothie, which I really love. If you're committed to drinking breakfast smoothies regularly, I highly recommend getting a smoothie cup with a straw; drinking think smoothies is much nicer, easier with the straw and having a cup with a cap will let you take it with you as you're drinking.

Hi there, sorry about the delay in responding to your first comment. Thanks for finding me on here. I really think this could beneficial (especially since we seem to be similar in weight/age, as you noted).
How did last week go for you? To be honest, last week I went on a week-long fast food binge. It was not pretty but it did help me wake up to the fact that in creating a space for me to eat healthier, I need to make some drastic changes. My plan this week is to:
* Plan my meals & snacks every morning
* Follow the philosophy that I can only eat what I plan, so if I want something, I just need to plan it for the next day
* Avoid fast food and frozen fried foods all week
* Walk 5 times this week

Glad you have come bouncing back, keep us up updated. Mare and I keep in touch through friends feed. I am trying to catch up with all her fitness mins. Even logging in and spinning that wheel every day and update status with spin lets your friends know you are still around.
