Taking It Back

For as long as I can remember I've always lived to make sure my family was taken care of the best they possibly could be. I made it my mission in life and I prided myself on that. It was my job. At the end of the day however, if I could skimp on any one little thing, I would choose me. Along the way, all those days added up and I landed at a place I swore I would never be again - overweight.

I woke up one day - really woke up - and saw age 40 staring me in the face. It was then that I realized I needed to make some changes. You see, my own mother passed away at age 46. She lived her entire life taking care of everyone and everything in her life and she did it remarkably well. It was a tiring job though, and at the end of the day when she saw a place she could skimp, she chose herself. Not because she wanted to, but because she just didn't have one more ounce of energy to give that day. That ended up, in so many ways, taking her from us far too early.

The pain I felt the day we lost her, and every day after is something I've prayed for my children to never have to feel. They already lost their gramma, they shouldn't have to lose their mother, too. In that moment I knew I had to take control of this now before it was too late. That 'little' thing I thought I could skimp on... well, it isn't so little when you think of the pain your children will have to endure if you had to leave this world too soon.

That little thing is something I can change though, thankfully. It isn't too late. I have gained a lot but I've lost a lot in the past, too. I can do it again. And with the knowledge of 10 additional years on me - I think I got this. I'm taking my life back - because as my husband said to me the other day - we aren't old, sweetheart, this is just the beginning! And I believe him.
