I am over 50 and need to lose some poundage to not only look better, but take care of my health. Exercise alone hasn't worked as do get in exercise 3 or more times a week but haven't lost any weight--not changing my diet could be the reason! I was a skinny teenager who started putting on the weight after getting married and with each child. So here I go looking to monitor what I eat so I can look better, lower my cholesterol, lower my blood sugar, and just have a better quality of life. ...

I have a phobia about getting on the scale. Even at the doctor's office I ask them not to tell me! It is just too discouraging. And you will rarely see a picture of just me. I try to hide behind someone when I get my picture taken. They make me look good!

I am going to try and not let "falling off the plan" make me quit. That is why I am averaging calories and exercise in a week. Guess I am going for a balance, as we should with everything in life.

My Goals:
Short term:

-try to eat an average of 1500 calories per day

-Run 3 times a week

-Get in 2 times of strength training a week

-Drink 8 cups of H20 per day

-Lose 22 pounds by Thanksgiving

-make good food choices

-maintain balance!

My Program:
I plan to track what I eat for a good while so that I stay at about 1500 or so calories a day. Being told what to eat won't work for me. So I will make good choices and not obsess over everything I eat. Can't give up my glass of wine! I will keep up an exercise plan of doing something 4 days every week, alternating cardio and strength training. I will use a pedometer to help me keep track of how physical I am being.

Personal Information:
For the last 4 years I have lived just north of Pittsburgh, PA. I have 3 kids; my youngest is 18 and off to college in the fall. Married to Mike 30 years now! Working as a substitute teacher.

Other Information:
I like: growing herbs, listening to all kinds of music, all things Irish, searching my family tree, golden retriever smiles, the enthusiasm of little kids, smells of barbecue, just cut grass, Crayola crayons, frankincense and the air right before it rains....and fried green tomatoes. Yum.

Your dog is so beautiful! Just wanted to thank you for the comments about my poem and for taking the time to do so. I will write out the recipe. I'm just so lazy about using the recipe calculator because I'm a 'pinch of this and that' cook. I will place it in my recipe box this weekend. Thanks for asking.

HI! I saw your profile picture with your Sheltie and had to leave a comment! How cute! I have 3 Shelties and also am the leader of the Sheltie Lovers team. They are great dogs!! you are doing awesome on your healthy lifestyle journey! We have a lot in common like trying to get 10,000 steps a day and trusting God to be our rock through this. I will be leading a team starting the end of July that is for walking. If you are interested please let me know. It isn't through Spark, but alot of my SparkFriends will be doing this together. I've been off Spark for awhile. So happy to see that you finally Blogged!!!! Great. I'll go read your blogs. Been so darn busy, tired. I'm going to take it easy this weekend. Last weekend 3 days of camping and today is Saturday up at 6:00 and to work for 4 hours. I just ate and am taking a nap. Hope you have a great weekend...............and get out and do it. Cherry and I have been walking, but tonight will be our last night since she returns to China on Sunday. I will miss her. Hugs...............G

It is a joy having your own island, there are never any neighbour disputes. I love going out in the kayak early in the morning when the mist is just rising off the lake and the water is like a sheet of glass. I have fished from the kayak, it works great as long as the fish on the other end of the line isnt too big (in my case they never are). Congratulations on your weight loss journey, although from the pictures you have posted, you dont look like you need to lose 20 lbs. Have a great summer and keep paddling. Adrian

Pretty picture of a sailboat. Glad you had a good visit with your folks and, of course, you can't walk as much as needed when you have company -- especially if they can't walk with you. My AFS girl, Cherry, from China, loves to walk and we've been going together. I'm going to miss her when she's gone. I actually asked her to stay another week. I've got to get Robert up and get him to take his Dad down to the Father's Day car show and Cherry will go. I've got vegetables to plant.

I'm not sure exactly what your new job is so let me know. We had a beautiful day yesterday, walked on the Greenbelt, went to our Farmer's Market. Friday I walked 17,000+ steps.

As for Spark Points - I don't know how you could give more. There is a
"Spark Motivator" that you can click on someone's home page saying that you think the person is a motivator?

You have a lovely Sunday, keep your Spark alive. I wish we lived closer so we could walk and do stuff together. Be good and hugs,
