Flourishing

To Flourish - "to grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way".

Life is filled with choices. For too long I chose to say "I can't". "I can't lose weight"; "I can't exercise" "I can't socialize or travel because I'm embarrassed because of my weight"; "I can't", "I can't", "I can't", etc. etc." All those negative choices resulted in my being a morbidly obese recluse getting fatter by the month.

I was sexually abused when I was a child. When I realized that the CSA (childhood sexual abuse) contributed to my lifelong weight and current health problems (fibromyalgia/CFIDS), it was an "Aha!" moment. In April of 2011, I decided that I would no longer be a lifelong victim. I would take charge and get my health back before it was too late.

I successfully lost 50 lbs on the 17DD in 2011 but went off the plan and gained back 20 lbs in 2012. I sabotaged myself with all the "I can'ts" or worse yet the "I don't deserves". Survivors often have low self esteem. which is why so many of us have addictions. My addiction is to certain foods. I realized through much soul searching that I create my own reality and that I could choose to step ooff of this negative path.

I am 61 years old and choose to live the rest of my life filled with health and happiness. I am making the choice to be fit. I am choosing to apply everything that I have learned about nutrition and eat clean and healthy. There are no foods that "I can't have", just foods that I choose not to eat. I am giving myself permission to be well.

Besides a diet (just a healthy way of eating), I know that there are other things that are important parts of a successful Diet Tool Kit for remaining motivated like: meditation, visualization (guided imagery), self-hypnosis, positive affirmations, and mindfulness.
Visiting Sparkpeople daily, is probably one of my most important tools. I would never have persevered to this point, without all the support and encouragement I receive from the friends I have met here along the way.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how CSA (Childhood Sexual Abuse) or any childhood maltreatment, may have contributed to your obesity and how it can affect your health in later years. I also urge you to seek help from a licensed professional who specializes in PTSD and trauma, if you have been a victim.

My Goals:
I want my senior years to really be my "golden" years!

I want to be a healthy weight and have grace and balance.

I want to be able to fit in seats again; whether it's on a plane, a hockey arena or a theatre.

I don't want to feel pain walking and I want to be able to take stairs normally.

I want to be able to kneel down and garden.

I want to be a success story so that I can be an example to other survivors of CSA who struggle with food addiction as a result of that abuse.

My Program:
I followed the 17DD for 4 rounds in 2011 and lost 50 lbs. Now I'm taking those principles of carb cycling and clean eating and doing my own thing.

I also learned that - "I can do it". It takes constant vigilance, but it's doable.
I also learned that a sensitivity to gluten was a major roadblock in my previous weight loss efforts. I would never have learned that without the 17DD.

Personal Information:
I'm from upstate NY, married, no children. We have two dogs and one cat all rescues.
I have fibromyalgia/CFIDS. I'm very into organic gardening and like to travel. My husband and I have a small travel trailer. I'm an avid reader (fantasy fiction, psychology books and mysteries). I like New Age, classical and oldies music, and am very into meditation and mindfulness practice.
My DH and I are both retired.

Other Information:
I believe in the power of the individual to create their own reality.

Anything on MBSR - Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction by Dr. Jon Kabbatt Zin is well worth checking out if you suffer from chronic pain like I do.

Hey there Gabby Sue!
Yes, it IS sunny and hot where I'm at! Finally! We're at an RV rally in the Hill Country (@75 miles north of San Antonio). It's our 3rd year here, and while the rally only lasts a week, we booked an entire month in this park since it's so-ooo relaxing and in the country!

Oh, my goodness! If you're going to convert your garage into a "summer" room, I can only envision that you're going to LOVE it!!! What a fun thing to look forward to! I'm happy for you!
