I've been Sparking for a few years now and I have had some great success with figuring out how to make myself healthy, but I'm coming into the 2015 Spring 5% Challenge a bit flabby from grad school stress. I have a whole closet full of clothes I would like to be able to wear again, not to mention getting my self-esteem back!

I've been Sparking for a few years now and I have had some great success with figuring out how to make myself healthy, but I'm coming into the 2015 Spring 5% Challenge a bit flabby from grad school stress. I have a whole closet full of clothes I would like to be able to wear again, not to mention getting my self-esteem back!

I began this journey by idly flipping through "Oh, The Places You'll Go". I realized that I was stuck in The Waiting Place. ("...waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or waiting around for a Yes or No or waiting for their hair to grow. Everyone is just waiting.") At the time I was feeling a bit stuck in my job and my weight was creeping up courtesy of Messrs. Ben and Jerry. I decided then that I needed to kick myself into gear. No more waiting; I wanted to "find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing!"

Since joining SparkPeople I have learned oodles about health and wellness, and now I am working to get back down to my goal weight of 135 pounds. It's not easy to balance the persistent stress of a PhD program with being healthy but I am determined to make it work.

My Goals:
-Get down to a heart-healthy 130 lbs
-Run 1 mile without walking
-Complete a 5k
-End emotional overeating
-Wear an itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini (bikini purchased...waiting for my body to catch up!)

My Program:
-Keep it paleo-ish - veggies, unprocessed meat, fish, fruit, and some seeds, nuts, and dairy.
-Log on to SP daily
-10,000 steps a day
-Daily stretching
-Strength training 2-3x/week
-Intense cardio 1x/week (running, swimming, or hiking)
-Sleep 7+ hours each night
-Blog/journal every day
-Have fun!

Personal Information:
I love to geek out, hang out with friends, do outdoorsy things, and read/watch various forms of escapist fiction. I'm halfway through a PhD program studying molecular microbiology and geology, and some of my favorite things are hiking, camping, reading, photography, juggling, ice skating, board- and video- games, self-sufficiency, my boyfriend (aww), my family, my cat, and being cheeky!

To me, Sparking is a way to fight idleness, get healthier, work on my moxie, and develop something that looks a lot like gumption.

Healthy feels so good!

HI Gina !! NEAT that you do most of the cooking. I "know" how to cook, but hey, the grands are all grown now,,, they used to meet at my place,,,,, their parents LOVED IT ! They knew they were SAFE, but I had all the toys they loved,,, Wii, another game console,,, that we used to learn how to play the electric guitars with. As well as yes,, the elet guitars,,, with amps. A wide screen TV,, when they fist came out. LOL Yes,,, I am JUST A BIG KID at heart,,, and I kept them OUT OF TROUBLE ! I'd also allow a bunch of their friends to come over. I was Grandma to quite a few. Now though they are all grown up. .

One of them though will be returning back to Maine,, YEAH !! He's now 24,,, did college out in Denver,, he had moved there,,,, 3 yrs ago,,,, Maine is NOT a good state,,,when you are chronically ill. I had also moved with them at the same time. They fixed my back as much as they could. I was bent over quite a bit from the scoliosis,,, in Denver,, they had these funky beds you lay down on,, and the slowly stretches out ur spine. When I moved back home,,, i was for the first time ever,, able to stand UP STRAIGHT !! WOOHOOO !! Since then,, I've found a DO who is able to keep me upright ! I am of course pleased about this. For Travie,, National Jewish Hospital,, discovered he is one of 2 in the US who have a rare illness,, autoimmune . they put him on a med,, embrel,, and he's NOT been critcial since !! Here we almost lost him 51 times !!! So yeah,, now he's healthy. We are BEYOND THRILLED ! He'll be on the first plane back,, once he gets his diploma. YEAH YEAH YEAH !!!!!
