Two steps forward, one step back...

I've been Sparking for a few years now and I have many past successes to build on, but enrolling in a PhD program has proven to be tough on my health. I'm now fighting hard to get back down to a healthy weight. Diet and exercise, mind over matter. I wandered off the path for a bit but now the ol' spark has been rekindled. Bring it on!

I began this journey by idly flipping through "Oh, The Places You'll Go". I realized that I was stuck in The Waiting Place. ("...waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or waiting around for a Yes or No or waiting for their hair to grow. Everyone is just waiting.") I decided then that I needed to kick myself into gear. No more waiting; I wanted to "find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing"!

Since then I've hiked a few hikes, taken up running, discovered the wonderful world of paleo eating, rediscovered the joys of juggling, danced like no one's watching, picked things up and put them down, and have (occasionally) been content with just being myself.

I have learned oodles about health and wellness and now I am working hard to get back down to my goal weight of 125 pounds, right in the middle of the healthy BMI zone for my 5'2 frame. It's not easy to balance the persistent stress of a PhD program with being healthy but I am determined to make it work!

On that note, I bid you welcome to my little corner of the SparkPeople universe. Enjoy your stay!

Personal Information:
I love to geek out, hang out with friends, do outdoorsy stuff, read/watch sci-fi, escapist fiction, poetry, chick flicks, old movies, and musicals, and I love microbes, astronomy, libertarianism, photography, juggling, ice skating, hiking, camping, and being cheeky.

Since I joined SP I'm fighting idleness, getting healthier, working on my moxie, and you might say I'm developing something that looks a lot like gumption. Healthy feels so good!

Thank you so much. This is going to sound terrible but I only applied to one school- not a very good program because I thought it was the only school crappy enough to take me. I'm not very impressive. Basically I only applied to my safety school... and they rejected me... what a kick in the crotch.

I won't give up. I promise. But I might need a week to just not think about it too much. I'm not doing anything until at least Monday.

You're the BEST! I hope things are going okay for you!

Nifty! That sounds really interesting. Biochemistry (enzymology in particular) is my grad school interest of choice.
