I didn't become active until my early 30s. After my dad passed from smoking-related cancer in the mid 1980s, I quit smoking and started swimming, as I always loved the water. That activity led me to underwater hockey, which I have played since 1991. I compete in local, regional, and national tournaments, and have even been to one world competition.

I also liked running, and I ran track in high school, but I injured my knee in a long jump. After that I had pain when I ran so thought I would never be a runner. I met a woman (now a friend) who told me I was probably not in the right shoes. I got fitted and was happy to discover that I COULD run pain free, and in fact the running has strengthened me knee. So, at the age of 46 I started running, and as of mid-2014, I have done 2 marathons, 13 half marathons, and countless 10Ks and 5Ks. I have also done a few triathlons, and my next goal is to complete a 70.3, as well as PR a marathon before the end of 2015.

If I could send a message to people it would be that you are never too old to change your lifestyle, and to not expect huge changes in a short amount of time. It is a constant work in progress with backslides and progressions.

Hey Carolyn! Glad to see your spirits are good, despite all of the stuff going on. So, If you are using tart cherry juice extract, the serving is 2tbsps twice a day. I believe it is 8 ounces twice a day if you are drinking the plain, unconcentrated juice.

Let me know how it goes. I am going to start it today, and my dad is too. He has had a similar shoulder issue as the author of the NMA blog and was so excited when he read about the results.

Speedy recovery!

Hit me up with a reminder about the race. I will know more after finishing Big Sur and recovering from it.

I loved that old Bob Newhart skit you mentioned: "Stop it!"

Great memories!
