I didn't become active until my early 30s. While I played softball in my teens and 20s, I was a smoker and more interested in going out to dinner and clubs than geting up in the morning and exercising. After my dad passed from smoking-related cancer in the mid 1980s, I quit smoking and started swimming, as I always loved the water.

That activity led me to underwater hockey, which I have been playing since 1991. I compete in local, regional, and national tournaments, and have even been to one world competition. It is my passion.

At the age of 46 I started running, and about 6 weeks later I entered my first 5K. I decided that I would run a 5K every month which will force me to continue training. Six months later my 5K pace went from 11:13 to 10:00. About 5 months after I started running I borrowed a friend's bike and did a sprint triathlon.

In the last year I have seen my fitness improve, and lost 7 pounds without radically changing my diet. In 2011 I did my first marathon at the age of 51. While training, I lost an additional 13 pounds and have kept it off as I continue to keep running, biking, ocean swimming and underwater hockey and healthy eating as part of my lifestyle.

On the subject of diets, I don't believe in them and have never been on one. I try to look at food for its nutritional value, rather than the immediate gratification that comes from eating it. I slip up sometimes, but then get myself back on track. I find that if I am working out I crave healthier food.

If I could send a message to people it would be that you are never too old to change your lifestyle, and to not expect huge changes in a short amount of time. It is a constant work in progress with backslides and progressions.

My Goals:
* Run another marathon
* Do a Half Ironman Triathlon

No definite time frame on these goals, but I'd better hurry up as I'm not getting any younger! Possibly late 2012/early 2013

My Program:
* Continue running 3-4 times a week
* Strength train
* Get with a personal trainer to pick a half ironman race and start training (Summer 2012?)
* Marathon will come after the HIM

I loved that old Bob Newhart skit you mentioned: "Stop it!"

Great memories!

Ah Carolyn again we are going through similar situations! After talking about the food issues things have been better and he has resisted making comments - we will get there with more time and communication! Part of me might always miss the autonomy of living alone though! So much more control over things!!! Anyways, if Jon gave me too much ice cream - the likelihood of me putting the rest down the drain is sooo slim! My self control has definitely been better - but - not there yet! Anyways the payoffs of sharing my life with someone are bigger (i guess) than having to eat ice cream every now and then!
