5/16/16 update
We all have challenges. Some of mine have been multiple sclerosis, cancer, fibromyalgia, thyroid disease, arthritis and migraines. But, though some of that continues to challenge me, none of it defines me.
Each day is a new opportunity to become the healthiest me I can be. I eat heathy most of the time and when I don't, I no longer stress about that. I walk pretty much every day and seek ways to add to my step count throughout my days. My goal is 10,000 steps per day and I've been very consistent in reaching this during the past four months. Before that ms was preventing me from walking very much so often that it was very discouraging. But, it was an amazing blessing to suddenly be able to walk longer distances. In fact, just last week I averaged more than 14,000 steps per day! I can hardly believe it. I know I will likely have ms exacerbations and set backs, but for now I'm so enjoying this ability and never take it for granted.
My dear husband and I have been married for 43 years, have two grown married children and five wonderful grandkids (13, 11, 7, 6, 5). I'm hoping he will retire in the next few years so we can spend more time with the far away grandkids. We are blessed to have the other family only about 20 miles from us.
While I cared for my mom a lot during the last three years of her life, including moving far from home to live with her the last six months, I sometimes didn't get to do all I would have liked to take the best care of myself. She's been gone more than a year now and I often wish she was just a phone call away when I have something I would so love to share with her. But, I've gotten myself back on track since I came home and feel so good about where I am and where I am going. After losing some weight in the wake of her death, I gained back pounds I certainly didn't want and had to get going again. Now I'm pretty happy with where I am and my doctor insists I'm not overweight. But, I still want to lose at least a few more pounds to truly feel I am the best me I can be.
A few weeks ago I actually began jogging a bit as I walked and that has continued. That is something I've not been able to do for nearly 40 years and presumed I would never do again. I will enjoy this renewed ability as long as I am able. What ms seemed to have taken has in some measure returned. I take none of this for granted either. I so look forward to each day as another opportunity to get stronger, healthier and truly be the healthiest me I can be!

I'm a California girl who was transplanted to Utah many years ago. I still miss the beaches, but love the mountains. I've been married since March 1973, have two married children and five grandchildren. The kids live in Washington and Utah. I struggle with challenges related to multiple sclerosis, migraine headaches, hypothyroidism and fibromyalgia.Life is good! My name is Barbara, but my Spark name comes from the name my first grandson gave me when he first began talking. I've been Baba ever since.


Other Information:
I've struggled with weight most of my life. It's never been an issue of obesity, but it has interfered with life in many ways and continues to be an emotional burden. I dread looking into mirrors. But, it is getting better every day as I strive to be the healthiest me I can be.

    Thanks for the comment on my blog from yesterday. I appreciate your attitude of losing on a cruise can be a great memory to make it through you next two weeks. I wish you well on those next two weeks and the days that will temp you beyond anything right.

    I am sure you can make it through, but remember to not feel guilty if you cave once a week and work hard to work it off again. I will suggest that you take a small bag or lunchbox loaded with raw veggies if you can and eat those should you be faced with nothing you feel is healthy for your lifestyle.

    I've learned we can only change our lives. We can't make other people consider us in anyway and I'm not sure we should even try.

    I had a chorus leader that had to lose weight. It was told to me by many that she would attend parties and meetings where there was food present. She had her own food in a lunch box and if anyone made a comment (good or bad) she would tell them she had to lose weight in order to live and that means she will not eat anything off her limited menu.

    I applaud her for the focus and the fortitude to tell busy-bodies to think about it and let her eat what she was eating without the additional temptations. I know I cave too easily, but I'm learning to be stronger, mentally, for days line yours ahead.
