August 2017. So I went for a hike on the Appalachian Trail, thinking it would get me in the best shape of my life. Unfortunately, the plan backfired: after 350 miles in a month, I was finally in such pain I simply could not go any further. An MRI showed a strained ligament and severe bone bruising in my right knee. Bone bruising sounds kind of insignificant, but it isn't: it takes 3-6 months to heal, and is painful enough that it was a month before I could sleep through the night without waking up when the Advil wore off. So I spent almost two months doing next to no exercise, gained back the weight I shed on the trail, and lost muscle and conditioning. At 65, you lose fitness a lot faster than you gain it.

But now, after a few weeks of walking, I'm back to short hikes with a fairly light pack, and trying my best to keep my eating in line. It's hard. I got demoralized, and I haven't completely sprung back. So I'm really looking forward to September, when BLC 35 will start, and, hopefully, the smoke in Montana will clear.

I spend the winters in Florida, so I can hike pretty much every day, somewhere.
