I have always struggled with my weight. Ususally I have been carring around 40 extra pounds. Now that I am older and am having some health issues, I know I need to get it off. Last year I took a big step by signing up for the Susan G Komen 5k. I did it without any problem, so I then took the big plunge and committed to the St. Vincent Foundation Beast Cancer Walk which was 20 miles in one day. I had never done anything like this before. I trained for 6 months. On the big day, I completed it in 6 1/2 hours. With this accomplishment, I then realized I can do what ever I put my mind to(after all, I had went back to college at age 58 for a new degree after a divorce), so I signed up for my first half-marathon. There are 3 training walks to prepare for this. The first 5k 2 weeks ago, I completed at a 15.36min/mile pace. I have to be able to maintain an 18m/mi pace for the marathon, meaning I have to do 13.1 miles in 4 hours. This winter has been hard to stay motivated to put in the time to walk with the winter weather being so bad and I hate using a treadmill as a substitute. Next weekend, Mar.5th I will be doing a 10k.
My struggle with weight loss has been compounded with going from being hyperactive thyroid to hypothyroid after having ablation of my throid. I had put off this procedure as I knew how it would couse my metabolism to really slow down, but when I was hyperactive, I was having a lot of heart issues. Now I feel I have to work out twice as hard to compensate for the low metabolism. I get discouraged easily. I happened on this site and hope it will get me motivated, rejuvinated and held accountable. Reading that so many others are going thru the same helps me not feel like I am on my own with this journey.
