It is possible to turn around even grim news. This is how I got here and recommitted last Fall:
When facing a health crisis comes the realization its NOW or NEVER!
I found out that I have severe chronic kidney disease due to out of control diabetes...... what did I do? I got OFF the sugar first of all, I started taking all my heart, cholesterol, thyroid, blood pressure and other meds needed to feel better.
BUT, now I've found my new food plan and I went back to the pool daily........ and NOW I am off insulin altogether and my blood sugar is now NORMAL! Also cut my other diabetes meds to 1/4 of what I used to take, my blood sugar is still good now.
And I have cut one of my heart meds down to half, and I am taking less pain meds too. All because I am eating healthy real food only now. No preservatives or artificial anything. No sugar or fake sugar, No dairy, No grains.
What DO I eat now????? Produce and Protein and that is all, and not all of that either, specific kinds like lean protein, lots of fish and produce that grows above ground, no starchy veggies, and no tubers or legumes. And I stick to it 100%. Because if I eat one bad food, one sugar, one slice o bread I will again be off to the races, and NO one wants that.
I am down 20 pounds and 10 1/2 inches and I am on day 95 as I write this update. AND I feel pretty darn good most of the time, more energy, more hope, more life in me than in years.
It has been a decade since I have lost any weight, this is a welcome and humbling change, that I must give credit to my 3 P's, what are they? Pool, Paleo and Prayer. This is what is getting me thru.
I joined a wonderful support group, and Spark People and started walking and I am also on a calorie restricted diet that is kidney friendly with lower phosphorus and potassium and NO sodium.
Now I am doing the Paleo Diet and hoping this works!
Did I mention NO NO NO sugar, yep, the count of days of NO sugar is on my ticker, it's a good thing. :-)
Best of all I have been able to cut way back on insulin injections and believe it is due to my new real food only diet..... and even better than that I am OFF the insulin altogether and down to a 1/4 glipizide once a day...... this is a good change and I feel so much better too!

With help from friends and family and alot of help with all the support I can get, I hope to join the ranks of "the healthy" so I can live a longer life and enjoy myself even more.
Maybe paleo will work for me. So far so good!
Biggest Goal: Feel Better!
Weight loss is one of the basics of my program, support of a group helps alot too. Recovery is a process and a journey I am willing to take, just for today.
I am from Northern California and lived here til I was 29, then I moved to Hawaii for 25 years, and now my husband, who is Chinese Hawaiian and I live in Northern California, but we visit our home in Hawaii often. Not often enough, we missed this year.
Some of my interests are:
My own journey, Jilly 101 ...... Swimming and
I play guitar on a regular basis with a group of guys I used to play with in High School.
I now have 4 ukuleles to play around on too.
I paint and I do genealogy too. My doggy is the sweetest, she is a cocker named Darby and she has her own Twitter feed. We love to camp, travel, baseball and more.

All I can say is how it works for me, which is one day at a time, and doing strict Paleo too. I have not cheated in 148 days and don't plan on cheating, but I still have alot of weight to lose and alot of health issues too.
Keep it simple, I have not gone for lots of special cooking, I just eat protein and produce (non starchy) and make sure some is raw everyday. My typical day:
breakfast: eggs and fruit
lunch: big salad with protein, Newmans oil/vinegar dressing
dinner: entree with small salad and veggies or a stir fry
snack: fruit and some nuts
I've lost 29 pounds so far and I will weigh later this week...... I am very grateful too, when I get cravings I pause and if its real bad call a friend or write about it, the cravings will pass ~

Thanks so much, I have been off sugar a long time, but I did not lose any weight until about 4 months ago when I radically gave up all sugar substitutes, all grains and all dairy too. I only eat produce that is not starchy and protein, usually just lean, and have lost some weight. Its crucial for my health. And just one day at a time.
None of this is easy but not eating those substances ever helps so much because the cravings cannot get a hold, and the mental obsession does not get triggered for me anyway.

And I see by your tracker that you are almost 500 days sugar-free. That's marvelous!
