I lost 33 lbs and reached my goal with Weight Watchers Online in 2004. Since then I've yo-yo'd up and down anywhere from 10-20 lbs. WW helped me reach a magic number on the scale but counting points didn't teach me how calories, nutrients and movement all work together. This time I'm doing it my way by educating myself and listening to my body. I would love to drop 10 lbs or more by fueling my body with healthy foods and getting moderate exercise on a regular basis. Instead of attempting to lose at an overly restrictive calorie range, I'm eating healthy foods that fit within a range I've set for myself. I've made a conscious effort to eliminate most junk foods but that does not mean I'll refuse a cookie or a piece of birthday cake because it doesn't fit into my calorie range. I eat the food, accept the higher calories for that day and move on.

I walk 30-35 min. 4-5x a week. My goal for the coming months is to build muscle through strength training. I also plan to resume Zumba classes in October 2013, when my favorite instructor starts teaching again.

Slowly but surely the weight is coming off by gradually creating healthy habits. I've never believed in the all or nothing approach of dieting, fad diets that include extreme calorie restriction, working out for hours a day (who has time for that?) or eliminating entire food groups just to reach or maintain a magic number on the scale. My body is teaching me what works best and what weight is best for ME. I'm using the SparkPeople trackers as tools to learn how to make the right choices in my everyday life.

My thoughts on my own situation:
I'm not a bad person for regaining weight even if it was from overeating and inactivity. I've spent too much time feeling bad about myself because of an extra 10 lbs. I'm a big girl now and I need to treat myself with respect. That includes a positive attitude, healthy foods and movement. But - I will never deprive myself of occasional treats. If I enjoy a get-together that involves food, eat a cookie or two, an occasional ice cream cone or a piece of birthday cake, that doesn't mean I fell off the wagon or cheated or that I was "bad." I am not a bad person because I enjoy food. It's okay to eat something without stressing about calories, whether the food is considered healthy or not. If I can walk away after eating just one (as they say in the Lay's commercials!), I've created a new habit and changed my lifestyle. I'm working on that new habit right now. It's not a daily battle, but I do have to make a conscious effort whenever I'm faced with something that could trigger overeating. I've only been working on this for a couple of months but I have 50 years of habits to break. I'm hoping someday it'll be second nature to take one serving and not have to fight the urge to have another. That'll be success for me.
