I've put on a great deal of weight over the last few years. I went from being 115 pounds and a size 4 to 200 pounds and a size 16. I'm only 5'3" tall so that's a lot of weight for me. I no longer feel comfortable in my clothes, and it has been a challenge understanding the space I occupy. I have less room than I think I have, so I bump into things, especially while entering doorways. I also feel clumsy and awkward with my movements.

A major life changing factor that led to the weight gain is when I injured my calf, started grad school, and then started teaching. I used to in-line skate, swim, bike, and hike; however, while in-line skating I made a jump onto a sidewalk, but I missed it by a fraction. My skate hit the concrete, and my right leg somehow twisted during the fall. My calf was injured and the pain was excruciating. I couldn't walk for two weeks on that leg. At the time I was also in grad school, studying and preparing for classes, so it became easy to stop being active. When I started teaching, my inactive lifestyle continued. I gained 85 pounds! I had gone an active lifestyle to a sedentary one.

I now understand that I continued to eat for my active lifestyle, so I wasn't burning those extra calories, but my eating also changed. I went from someone who prepared healthy meals and rarely ate fast foods to someone who ate fast foods and rarely ate a healthy meal. It became convenient to pull into a fast food chain so that I wouldn't have to cook and clean up. I had no understanding of how to combine a healthy lifestyle with my busy student/teacher lifestyle.

But it's never too late.

Even though I have tried on my own to plan meals and exercise and have tried Jenny Craig and have seen short-term successes, I know that I can achieve my goal of losing weight and leading a healthy lifestyle and reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle for lifetime success.

I'm excited to be embarking with SparkPeople on my lifelong journey to a healthy and active lifestyle.
