One Year in Austin (And Out of the Snowbelt)

January is my one year anniversary as an Austinite. A year ago, I happily left the snowbelt I had lived in for almost twenty years. I knew I needed to return to a warmer climate to be able to work on getting myself back into any kind of shape. And, IT WORKED! I have my balance back. I not only walk without a cane now, I regularly go on 4+ mile walks! I have also done three 10k walks to date. I have lost some weight. Now I am working toward more weight loss goals and on total body fitness. I am doing the January Jumpstart Challenge. Even though the daily video workouts need a lot of modification for me to complete them, I am not throwing my hands up in despair or defeat. I am plodding on.

ARCHIVED -- Milestone: One Year of Retirement. I have passed another mile marker. I have been retired for one year. In that year, I turned 65, I traveled, I moved out of the Midwest where work had taken me (and moved back to some heat), I began to get healthier, I gained and lost a little weight, etc. Now, I am looking forward to visiting with family arriving for my son's imminent wedding. After that, I'll figure out what's in store for me in my second year of retirement.

ARCHIVED - The New Normal: After three and a half years of serious medical issues that had me in and out of hospitals and surgeries and such, I am changed and need to rebuild muscle and then develop muscle strength. I also need to lose weight and increase energy. Since I have now retired and moved to Austin, Texas, I have time to put this Humpty Dumpty back together again and I can do it in an city that celebrates health and fitness. It will not be easy, and I won't be able to get to where I was before all this happened. I just want to be the best me that I can be.

Coach Nicole has a blog titled "Strength Training with a Disability" and it might be worth a look.

I also have decided that some substitutions or modifications must be made. On the whole, though, I'm glad I couldn't preview the videos before I started this challenge....if I'd known what I was letting myself in for I might not have done it! emoticon

Took a respite from the challenge due to pain. Am all caught up with the missed video workouts and up to date in week three now. I am substituting a 15 minute yoga routine with J Smith for the Saturday workout video. I just cannot stress my right shoulder like that.

If you are not well, do not push it.
