Lynn's Spark Page

Welcome to my Spark Page. Thanks for stopping by. I suppose you are curious about my story so here are the basics. I started this adventure with Spark People on March 29, 2009. At the time I weighed 173 pounds. I know that may not sound awful, but for a 5'4' 46 year old guy, it was rather heavy. I was unquestionably overweight. I was actually right on the threshold of obese.

My initial SP plan was to track everything I ate and begin exercising regularly. This generally entailed walking, sometimes outdoors, sometimes on my treadmill. Slowly but steadily the weight came off. About six months into the program, I decided that I wanted to validate my weight loss and celebrate my transformed lifestyle by completing a 5K run. So began what has become my favorite hobby/activity/obsession. I have now completed a dozen races ranging from the 5K distance to the Half Marathon. Even now it is hard to believe I just typed that I have completed a Half Marathon. When I started this adventure at 173 pounds and terribly out-of-shape I honestly don't think I could have finished a 5K. Maybe I could have by walking the whole distance, but it would have been a slow walk. And I would have been exhausted. Now I frequently tell me wife "I'm just going to go for a quick three mile run" as part of training and weight loss routine. I actually feel guilty for being able to fit in "only" three miles.

The main thing have learned so far is that this is a never-ending experiment. After about 18 months on SparkPeople I lost 40 pounds and reached my initial goal weight of 133. Today though I weigh 143. Part of that is from relaxing a bit, but part is that I have changed my body. The 143 I am now looks and feels so much better than the 143 I was on the way down. At this weight the BMI charts would say that I am only 2 pounds from being overweight. I don't believe that for a second. I am in great shape and people (even my doctor) still compliment me. In fact people tell me I need to stop losing weight so something must be working! Still, I do want to reclaim some of the progress I have made and get back to maybe 135 - 137 pounds.

Thanks for visiting my Spark Page. Let me know if you have any questions at all. If I can help anyone in anyway to become healthier I am glad to do so. A lot of folks on this site have been a huge help and inspiration to me and I would like nothing more than to pay it forward by helping others.

Good luck on your own journey. I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I have.

Lynn

thanks Lynn for your idea of mentioning the responses to my blog as evidence of the support that's available at SP ~ I will be sure to incorporate this into the conclusion of my speech.

God Bless, Marie

How 'bout them Vols? They looked pretty good the other night, and, of course, I'm looking forward to the season, good or bad, but I think it's gonna be good
:)
Did the 8K in the Crim Festival of Races last week-end. I did the 8K Walk, not the run, but it was my best time ever of the last 3 years I have participated.
I see you are doing well, and still accumulating minutes! Way to go :)
Have a good Holiday, and a great week!

Oh, and BTW, I have stayed in the 140's all summer, so I am making progress!

Take care,

Hi Lynn!
Thanks for stopping by and for the goodie. I love the massage, and they have really seemed to help. All-in-all, I'm feeling pretty good right now, and I'm moving again, and I'm losing for the first time in a while.

BTW, there is a kid from our town here in Michigan that just signed a full scholarship to Tennessee football. His name is Danny O'Brien, and he will be on defense. I met him the other day, and had him autograph my Big Orange Sweat shirt...LOL, but seriously, that's his first autograph to his first real fan. So keep track of him, I know I will be :)

Sounds like you are doing great with all your running still. That is so awesome!

Keep in touch!
Take care,

Yes, I am definitely counting the days til the end of school this year---has been such a rough year at my school---starting with the murder of my dear friend by her husband, then many of my staff members have had close family members die or illness, injury, or emergency surgeries----we all just want it to end. Glad you are getting in some runs. I am taking a water aerobics class 2x a week and my leg is improving and I am back to walking on Saturdays and plan on doing more with nicer weather. Have a great May!
