Gaining by losing

I am now 68. Retired in '07 to stay home with my then 92 year old mother.

My weight struggles started in my 20's when a doctor told me to lose 10 pounds. No problem. But they came back with some additional and I yo-yo-ed my way up over 200 pounds. Now it is time to make some major life changes so I can enjoy my "golden" years.

I have suffered from depression my whole life, but learned from my mother how to be depressed without being depressing. It is now mostly under control. Both healthy eating and exercise are supposed to be good for the mood, too. Hubby says being retired has been good for my disposition!

My Goals:
I need to lose some weight so that my arthritis does not get worse.

My Program:
I am cutting calories by substituting whole grains where possible, increasing fruits and vegetables and cutting back on sweets. I am also exercising.

Personal Information:
I live in Madison. Retired. Care for my mother. Both mother and husband have had open heart surgery to replace heart valves. Husband also had bypass. He retired Feb. 2013 a week before getting a carotid artery cleared.

Other Information:
My mother (97) moved into a nursing home last summer. This year is the 16th anniversary of my son's death.
