I've Gone Too Far To Give Up Now!

When I was pregnant at 20 years old, I was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure. I was devastated. I couldn't believe what the doctor was saying. Of course, I was hoping that after I had my first child (who by the way was 10 pounds at birth!) that the diabetes would dissipate. I was tested after I had my first daughter and I still had high sugar levels over 200.

Between having my first and second child, I bounced between the 260-270 range....

Of course, I was hoping that after I had my first child (who by the way was 10 pounds at birth!) that the diabetes would dissipate. I was tested after I had my first daughter and I still had high sugar levels over 200.

Between having my first and second child, I bounced between the 260-270 range....

Fast forward to 2010: I had my second daughter 2 weeks early and she come via c-section at a whopping 11 pounds 10 ounces and I was 272 right before giving birth!

After I had my second child, I "shrunk" (if you can call that) to 260. I felt horrible and had no energy to keep up with my small children.

I've been making excuses to go to the doctor that really were not worth risking my life. So, last year I finally got to a doctor and we tried a few different things to control my blood pressure levels and diabetes. By the middle of last year, my blood pressure levels stabilized, but my A1c levels actually increased 0.2%. I felt like I was getting nowhere.

By November I had it with the constant struggle of diabetes. I began eating smaller portions and before I knew it, I was fuller anyway with smaller portions.

Let's rewind a bit to March 2013. My A1c levels were at 8.6%. After I started medication, my A1c actually went UP in August to 8.8%. I was overwhelmed as to how that could've happened. But, by the time March 2014 came around, my A1c Levels were at 7.1%!!

It is finally paying off and the best part? Once I hit 6.5% I will not have to take diabetes medication anymore. Diet controlled, here I come!!!!

I'm down almost 73 pounds!

Hi Lizzy, I followed your blog over here from the blogs page and see that you're a type 2 diabetic. I'm a lot older than you, 64, and have never been more than 50 pounds overweight, but it still catches up with you sooner or later and I was told a few years ago I was type 2. I was only 6.8 so my doctor let me try to get it down with diet. I've found that equally important with losing weight is losing all the refined carbs and sugar, and in my case I went one step further and ditched all the grains. It's called the WheatBelly diet, sounds a little nutty but it works for me. I got down to 5.7 for a while, then got a little sloppy and back up to 6.2 but am now holding at 6.0.

At any rate, you are doing fantastic! Congratulations!

OOOOoohhh! A new job! What are you doing now? I hope your reunion with your daughters goes well... I can only imagine not seeing them for a whole vacation! I'm sure you got some needed rejuvenation, but I bet you're super excited to have them back!

My week is going... ok... I found out I might have gallstones, so am waiting for an ultrasound appointment on Friday to see for sure. Then might have to have surgery. I am feeling pretty bummed because I've been working all summer to build up to a rollerblading half-marathon on August 16 and I'm pretty sure if I have to have surgery that I won't make that goal... :( But we'll see. Trying to stay positive.
